the fact is - n95 masks can protect from things like droplets from spit/sneezing. however most pathogens are transmitted through mucus (nasally). The problem is with these loose fitting masks people constantly adjust them by moving their hands close to their nose - which can be more detrimental than helpful.

however, masks in general, if fitted properly, without the need for adjustment, obviously do help with prevention of larger droplets/particles (emphasis on larger) from contacting your face.
