The Marketplace and Innovations are not the same as 100 Years ago also.
Have you actually been alive this year???
He's talking largely about technological progress that enhanced freedom.
Cars, planes, etc.
@Beth you mean the pandemic , yeah once every hundred years we have a global pandemic so what. You are engaging in very short term thinking
Ahh I’m with you now 😌
Yes and Information sharing to say the least in the very near Past.
The idea of the first amendment actually wasn't the way it is today prior to 1919. People were imprisoned for lots of different kinds of speech prior to 1919.
It wasn't until 1919 that you had the greatest ruling in the SCOTUS in US history.
@james j I don't know if that is true or just a perception we have. Some things are easier to do now, others much more restricted.
What you have now is that power is being really heavily focused in a handful people, i am thinking of the owners of Amzon, Netflix, Facebook,Twitter, and the covid situation has only made this shift even faster. If this is not corrected EVERYONE will be subjected to the ideologies (whatever they are) of this very small handful of people and it will be very difficult to reverse.
@macsen your great great great grand parents would marvel at all the stuff you could do in a day that for them would take months
Or years
That's not the government though James.
I’m talking about actual tangible freedoms
Freedoms from the government have degraded over time with the exception of 1919.
The same thing was said after the invention of the Printing Press.
Governments gave us regulations to prevent factories from destroying our lakes
Or that medicine and food is relatively edible at the store
Oooh another one 😍
You don't want to walk down the road of the government is benevolent.
I would have to agree that there are technologies that exist today that did not then. However, from speaking to my grandfather about his starting a business and a family at age 23 it was easier to do so back then by far.
@macsen, you just advanced to level 3!
Yes many conservatives were against that and many conservatives in government were against that . The liberals of the day won that battle @Maw
@William Dinan true but there are how many printing companies? at least one per country. There is almost no realistic international competition
What's to stop someone from trying to do that again?
And if they did, and the citizens had no weapons, then what?
Yer fucked lol?
@macsen it was easier but was the consumer protected? You could sell a guy a broken house back then and skip town with no consequences
@Phil. If you read Ben Franklin's autobiography you will find that 200+ years ago there were already multiple printers in major cities. That quickly expanded into multiple languages ect
@Maw they didn’t just take away the rights of black people, they were seen as second class citizens prior to the civil rights acts. The civil rights act broke the old paradigm that existed before. The government didn’t create that it was already the status quo
@macsen yes its what i am saying. You have gone from thousands of capitalists to just a handful.
@james j. The consumer was protected by the community, people dealt with each other based on famiky name
Bro jim crow laws literally existed, what?
Are you sure you're a lefty?
Who pushed the Civil Rights Act?
