Unless your Status Quo is Liberty?

2020-12-13 22:58:52 UTC

It's not the older paradigm if it's the current paradigm.

2020-12-13 22:59:11 UTC

I say we have more liberty and freedoms now than 100 years ago @William Dinan

2020-12-13 22:59:22 UTC

Mostly, yes.

2020-12-13 22:59:40 UTC

The current paradigm is no particular point itโ€™s always morphing

2020-12-13 22:59:54 UTC

It's only changing if the system changes.

2020-12-13 23:00:09 UTC

The society is dynamic and ever changing.

2020-12-13 23:00:09 UTC

Mainly environment

2020-12-13 23:00:10 UTC

And that maybe due to Conservatives?

2020-12-13 23:00:11 UTC

The system is not.

2020-12-13 23:00:25 UTC

100 years ago there were only a fraction of the laws on the books as now

2020-12-13 23:00:33 UTC

How we have our needs meet changes the paradigm and the system should follow

2020-12-13 23:01:26 UTC

The point is the interpretation of the constitution changed over time, free speech wasn't as free as it is today before 1919.

2020-12-13 23:01:31 UTC

yet the average person today had more control over their lives, where they want to go, what they want to do. More avenues for personal growth have been made @macsen

2020-12-13 23:02:01 UTC

The Marketplace and Innovations are not the same as 100 Years ago also.

2020-12-13 23:02:07 UTC

Have you actually been alive this year???

2020-12-13 23:02:29 UTC

He's talking largely about technological progress that enhanced freedom.

2020-12-13 23:02:44 UTC

Cars, planes, etc.

2020-12-13 23:03:14 UTC

@Beth you mean the pandemic , yeah once every hundred years we have a global pandemic so what. You are engaging in very short term thinking

2020-12-13 23:03:14 UTC

Ahh Iโ€™m with you now ๐Ÿ˜Œ

2020-12-13 23:03:52 UTC

Yes and Information sharing to say the least in the very near Past.

2020-12-13 23:03:53 UTC

The idea of the first amendment actually wasn't the way it is today prior to 1919. People were imprisoned for lots of different kinds of speech prior to 1919.

2020-12-13 23:04:21 UTC

It wasn't until 1919 that you had the greatest ruling in the SCOTUS in US history.

2020-12-13 23:04:24 UTC

@james j I don't know if that is true or just a perception we have. Some things are easier to do now, others much more restricted.

2020-12-13 23:04:37 UTC

What you have now is that power is being really heavily focused in a handful people, i am thinking of the owners of Amzon, Netflix, Facebook,Twitter, and the covid situation has only made this shift even faster. If this is not corrected EVERYONE will be subjected to the ideologies (whatever they are) of this very small handful of people and it will be very difficult to reverse.

2020-12-13 23:05:17 UTC

@macsen your great great great grand parents would marvel at all the stuff you could do in a day that for them would take months

2020-12-13 23:05:26 UTC

Or years

2020-12-13 23:05:30 UTC

That's not the government though James.

2020-12-13 23:05:51 UTC

Iโ€™m talking about actual tangible freedoms

2020-12-13 23:06:00 UTC

Freedoms from the government have degraded over time with the exception of 1919.

2020-12-13 23:06:05 UTC

The same thing was said after the invention of the Printing Press.

2020-12-13 23:06:36 UTC

Governments gave us regulations to prevent factories from destroying our lakes

2020-12-13 23:06:56 UTC

Or that medicine and food is relatively edible at the store

2020-12-13 23:07:13 UTC

Oooh another one ๐Ÿ˜

2020-12-13 23:07:21 UTC

To prevent black people from being equal in society. I wouldn't walk down this road.

2020-12-13 23:07:43 UTC

You don't want to walk down the road of the government is benevolent.

2020-12-13 23:07:51 UTC

I would have to agree that there are technologies that exist today that did not then. However, from speaking to my grandfather about his starting a business and a family at age 23 it was easier to do so back then by far.

2020-12-13 23:07:51 UTC

@macsen, you just advanced to level 3!

2020-12-13 23:08:10 UTC

Yes many conservatives were against that and many conservatives in government were against that . The liberals of the day won that battle @Maw

2020-12-13 23:08:15 UTC

@William Dinan true but there are how many printing companies? at least one per country. There is almost no realistic international competition

2020-12-13 23:09:06 UTC

What's to stop someone from trying to do that again?
