This is almost like 110-115 years ago. It was remarked how Americans would get off work, go home and change out of their work clothes into a suit, and hit the pub to debate politics.

2020-11-17 02:15:49 UTC

I don't think I act as contrarian with people with whom I agree.

2020-11-17 02:16:13 UTC

I do if they misrepresent something on the other side.

2020-11-17 02:16:16 UTC

That's about it.

2020-11-17 02:16:20 UTC

It's common they do that though.

2020-11-17 02:16:43 UTC

Straw-manning hurts all causes.

2020-11-17 02:17:20 UTC

Can you always tell a straw-man from a different perspective?

2020-11-17 02:17:39 UTC

lol..the numbers will get larger here as this moves forward

2020-11-17 02:17:47 UTC

Unless you acknowledge your straw man and its purpose. That's a thing.

2020-11-17 02:17:51 UTC

That's the goal, @osok !

2020-11-17 02:18:16 UTC

That's usually called taking things to the extreme.

2020-11-17 02:18:24 UTC

@Whithers yes, if it's your own position they are misrepresenting.

2020-11-17 02:18:28 UTC

reason im here i like what your selling

2020-11-17 02:18:58 UTC

In between black and white there are 10,000 shades of color, but they still fall to one side or the other.

2020-11-17 02:19:20 UTC

Or if they are misrepresenting something that was agreed upon as someone else's position.

2020-11-17 02:19:30 UTC

I like to understand the actual arguments of my opposition.

2020-11-17 02:19:35 UTC

So I don't strawman them.

2020-11-17 02:19:50 UTC

So I don't take their position for an extreme position.

2020-11-17 02:20:08 UTC

I can sometimes point out their position can lead to extreme outcomes.

2020-11-17 02:20:28 UTC

Straw man is a specific thing. It's not about your opinion of their opinion. It's deliberately misrepresenting what their opinion is so you can attack the misrepresentation.

2020-11-17 02:20:43 UTC

Used to have a 1st Sgt that would say, clean is clean. If it isn't clean, it's dirty. Right is right, if it isn't right, it's wrong.

2020-11-17 02:21:16 UTC

1st sgts love aphorisms. Brevity is the soul of wit.

2020-11-17 02:21:24 UTC

What if their opinion isn't reality?

2020-11-17 02:21:31 UTC

dont get caught up the whats being said to much...just be you and everthing works out

2020-11-17 02:21:43 UTC

Aye.

2020-11-17 02:22:04 UTC

The show today was somewhat contentious, as I think Rob took a more practical approach.

2020-11-17 02:22:16 UTC

So both sides were a little upset.

2020-11-17 02:22:29 UTC

that a good thing

2020-11-17 02:22:41 UTC

Doesn't matter whether their opinion isn't reality. That's what you're arguing against.

2020-11-17 02:22:50 UTC

@osok Yeah, I can't go with that. There are conditions which prevent "being you" from being a good thing.

2020-11-17 02:22:59 UTC

or at least a tolerated one.

2020-11-17 02:23:17 UTC

Lmao everyone got pissed.

2020-11-17 02:23:31 UTC

Believe me, I know they did.

2020-11-17 02:23:57 UTC

Better to notice a Straw man or play devils advocate then to accept ones argument as the complete truth with no substance to back it up.

2020-11-17 02:24:18 UTC

and ...so what if they did...

2020-11-17 02:24:53 UTC

Haha, Robert is lurking.

2020-11-17 02:25:05 UTC

Some arguments can't be evaluated with quantifiable substance.

2020-11-17 02:25:08 UTC

You can never Win an argument when someone knows they are wrong. Yet continues to argue.

2020-11-17 02:25:11 UTC

Don't feel too bad about it Rob, it was a great show.

2020-11-17 02:25:28 UTC

Thanks @Maw and thanks for all your help today. I'm still shocked at the numbers, wow.

2020-11-17 02:25:45 UTC

Yeah, I was pretty stunned as it kept climbing by 1k.
