in both Twitter and Parler your timeline is shaped mainly by your own choices
it's true that you cannot find as many high-profile individuals in Parler, and barely any from the left. But you don't have to limit yourself to celebs.
@TaLoN132 yeah there really needs to be some updated laws wrt social media and first amendment protections, but theres not enough political will for it
Section 230 is supposed to provide protections like those for phone companies - AT&T can't be held liable because a group of bank robbers used the phones to plan their heist.
I think the government would have to own a share of twitter in order to protect civil rights on the platform
how so? you can just slap them with lawsuits for violating the law
having said that I don't like Twitter or Parler, personally - the only reason for me to use them is that a lot of people only announce stuff there, as a notification system. But I'm not a fan at all, whereas one of my brothers is positively addicted
I'd be more scared of a government run social media
I myself only really use it get notified as well
I had an idea for a social media company where you are allowed only 1 post per day, and 1 comment per day
or pay for premium to get 2
lol
Honestly, the timing of the pandemic couldn't have been any worse, especially on election year.
Sometimes the threat of government oversite is enough to get them to police themselves... That's how the Entertainment industry came up with the CARA rating system. DC started talking about forming censorship boards and the MPAA (a lobbying org) hired Jack Valenti to figure out how to keep DC at bay... It worked.
but who checks the government in that regard?
Gov. Cuomo said the recent Scotus decision was not definitive and is expected to enforce law as he sees fit at his own discretion
Well... the idea is to make it so the govt doesn't see a need to get involved. Canada has censorship boards by province, don't they?
i really dont want to be like canada
in regards to speech
That's the point...
sucks here
the problem is these people really think they are fighting 'nazis', and not even a majority of the government even cares about the censorship
I've always had plans to run some social media stuff, but I don't see any viable funding mechanism in the current environment
all of the left supports it, and plenty of RINOs are happy about it
Executive Branches have been reaching like this for a while. Bush 43 wanted the line item veto. When he didn't get it, he just started righting notes right on the bills themselves indicating what he planned to do or not do for certain line items - if I remember correctly.
I would not say all of the left supports it.
the left in government
Well... In the case of Social Media, it's not the govt doing the censoring.
Dunno about RINOs. Seems like that's a synonym for 'apostate' and I have a hard time figuring out the distinction.
RINOs
they have an R next to their name but dont arent actually conservative?
First amendment, applies to the govt infringing on free speech. The rest of us can pretty much censor how we see fit, righ?
if the corporations attacked the left, they would fight them like there's no tomorrow
if they censor, they are editorializing, and therefore liable for the content on their site
> they have an R next to their name but dont arent actually conservative?
@ImNotGas Seems easy to fix. Do they get in simply on the R? If so, shame on voters.
Well played, RINOs.
i mean lots of dems are like this as well
big business dems
