or maybe I just wanted to die

2016-12-09 03:59:43 UTC

Cisco will actually list the commands out for you

2016-12-09 03:59:45 UTC

so I couldn't concentrate enough in high school

2016-12-09 03:59:48 UTC

and give you their syntax

2016-12-09 04:00:21 UTC

and no other devices are going to give you on average

2016-12-09 04:00:22 UTC

you have to grasp the high level concepts of what you're actually trying to do first; then IOS is literally there to help you get it done. the damn things were built with config management baked in

2016-12-09 04:00:24 UTC

multiple years of uptime

2016-12-09 04:00:41 UTC

cisco stuff is mostly made in Hong Kong right

2016-12-09 04:00:58 UTC

like former crown colony HKU engineering

2016-12-09 04:01:14 UTC

Hong Kong

2016-12-09 04:01:16 UTC

all very solid

2016-12-09 04:01:18 UTC

and now somewhere in Eastern Europe

2016-12-09 04:01:22 UTC

it feels outdated and like some high school autist could just make a simple gui wrapper to make it less painful

2016-12-09 04:01:43 UTC

it's funny

2016-12-09 04:01:50 UTC

or maybe that was my mental illness making me incapable of basic tasks

2016-12-09 04:01:55 UTC

Verizon actually does web graphical wrappers on cisco stuff

2016-12-09 04:02:00 UTC

for their MPLS clients

2016-12-09 04:02:03 UTC

it. sucks. ass.

2016-12-09 04:02:10 UTC

you can't believe how horrible it is

2016-12-09 04:03:27 UTC

where I agree with you re: cisco pain is how things can go horribly wrong if you don't know wtf ur doing

2016-12-09 04:03:51 UTC

but that's why certs matter for network engineering and not so much for unix admin

2016-12-09 04:04:14 UTC

a cisco config is a sharp blade and when you write a command you best know wtf ur doing

2016-12-09 04:14:39 UTC

what would you recommend if I wanted to get a network job fast, what certs are good?

2016-12-09 04:18:05 UTC

everyone and their mom has a CCNA. it's a neccessary and a given. You probably want a leg up on other's by focusing on a particular industry and learning the reqs for it, e.g., if you want to do finance and ecom you should learn what is needed for PCI compliant networking gear. also what part of networking do you want to focus on

2016-12-09 04:18:32 UTC

getting a job fast actually is counter to getting a cert

2016-12-09 04:19:17 UTC

certs are more for cementing your creds and to make employers comfy with your skill level for any possible bounceback period from a layoff

2016-12-09 04:34:22 UTC

CCNA's have a 1.5% unemployment rate in my state

2016-12-09 04:35:45 UTC

you can made double starting if you invested the same time in bootstrapping a cisco-centric networking career into learning how to set up VPCs on AWS.

promode is doing both šŸ˜ƒ

2016-12-09 05:10:22 UTC

do you think I could be ready to take the test in a month's time?

2016-12-09 05:10:46 UTC

I'm in school for software engineering but I gotta drop down to half time and work full time while I finish my degree due to some shit

2016-12-09 05:13:57 UTC
