One of the sites suggest that there is a lens in the Firmament and that is how it works.

Light only bends with a solid object. Not air which is not solid and moves all the time.

That air might bend it but it would be wavy not just a direct bend.

Like the ship. The extra water and salt from the ocean bends light and you get a wavy reflection of the boat. This starts at the bottom of the boat and goes up as you get further away because of where the most humid and salty air is.
