There were a total of four incidents this spring in Djibouti, military officials said. Three of them involved the use of a military-grade laser that appeared to be coming from the logistics area of a Chinese base, which was built in recent years near an important military base the U.S. uses for drone and other sensitive operations. A fourth incident involved a commercially available device,, officials said.

In the most recent incident in Djibouti, two American pilots flying a C-130 turboprop experienced minor eye injuries after being exposed to the laser beam. The pilots experienced dizziness and seeing “rings” after the incidents, an official said at the time.
