Twitter user discloses Windows 0-day with no warning, no practical workaround

A zero-day Windows vulnerability was disclosed via Twitter on Monday, prompting a swift response from Microsoft. User SandboxEscaper posted a link to GitHub containing a proof-of-concept, which was determined by CERT/CC to be severe enough to warrant an alert.
What's the big deal?
Any Windows zero-day vulnerability is a big deal, and for good reason. One of the most used versions of the world's most popular OS exposes countless of individuals and organizations to attack.
In addition to SandboxEscaper, Phil Dormann, an analyst for CERT/CC, confirmed the bug's legitimacy. "I've confirmed that this works well in a fully-patched 64-bit Windows 10 system. LPE right to SYSTEM!" Dormann wrote on Twitter.

Microsoft Windows task scheduler contains a vulnerability in the handling of ALPC, which can allow a local user to gain SYSTEM privileges. We have confirmed that the public exploit code works on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 systems. Compatibility with other Windows versions may be possible with modification of the publicly-available exploit source code.
What's next?
According to CERT/CC, there's no "practical solution" to fix the bug, which puts users at the mercy of Microsoft. The bug likely isn't critical enough to warrant an out of cycle patch, however a Microsoft spokesperson told The Register that the company will "proactively update impacted devices as soon as possible."
