NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama will discuss her upcoming memoir "Becoming" as she kicks off the American Library Association's annual conference in New Orleans.
Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden will moderate a conversation Friday with Obama at the city's convention center.
Obama's book chronicles the experiences that have shaped her, from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive and her time at the White House. It's being released in the U.S. through the Crown Publishing Group, a Penguin Random House division.
The publisher says, "'Becoming' is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations — and whose story inspires us to do the same."
The conference is expected to draw more than 15,000 participants.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's health department says it's declaring a statewide outbreak of hepatitis A.
State officials say Ohio has 79 hepatitis A cases so far this year and that many of them are linked to a multi-state outbreak in neighboring states.
The 79 cases are nearly twice as many than what was reported all of last year.

Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia also are dealing with a large number of hepatitis A cases.
Hepatitis A is transmitted by oral contact with fecal matter.
It attacks the liver and causes symptoms including abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, fever and jaundice.

Texas Tech administrative officials have launched an investigation into a series of racially driven chatroom messages that have come to light.
On Thursday night a Twitter profile called Texas Tech Students, a profile that has since been deleted, posted a series of screenshots from a GroupMe message board called Frat Chat. The messages revolved around derogatory statements about undocumented immigrants between Tech students and fraternity members.
The chat group was a back-and-forth on how to deal with immigrants coming into the United States. One transmission read, “I’m telling you build a wall, and the us govt. can sell permits for legal hunting on the border and we can make a sport of this, can be a new tax revenue stream for the govt.”
Another chat read, “I’ve met ranchers that kill illegals and burry them under cattle graves along the border.”
All the messages sent seemed to have a joking nature to them, but Tech administration is not joking on what to do about these messages. With lots of verbal and social media backlash, the university has initiated a process that will look into how or if students violated the code of conduct policies related to speech, Matthew Gregory, Tech’s dean of students, said.
And if we deem that they do (violate policies), because it creates a racial harassment and hostile environment, we will pursue appropriate action,” Gregory said.
Tech issued an official statement on behalf of the university on Thursday night addressing the issue:
The messages shared on social media are abhorrent and strongly condemned. University officials are investigating this matter. Texas Tech University is proud of the inclusivity and rich cultures that make up our community. These insensitive and racially charged messages do not reflect the core values of the institution.
The students, whose names have not been released by the university, have been identified as fraternity leaders on the campus. As of Thursday night, student leaders with the Tech’s Interfraternity Council officially voted the students out of their leadership positions.

There are policies put in place that allow and require investigations to take place before the university can officially castigate a student and charge them with any wrongdoing, Gregory said. But as of now, Tech administration is addressing the issues to make it known to the students involved and the other people who see this that this speech is not condoned by the university.
“Because, we think it is imperative that people understand that we take this seriously,” Carol A. Sumner, vice president of the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, said. “So, we’re not waiting for it to rise to that level to say something has to be done.”
The people who are in the GroupMe chat are not on campus but Tech officials have made contact with the students and are letting them know about the investigation. As of now, there is no indication of what punishment could be, if there is any at all.
“We’re not in a position to tell organizations what to do,” Sumner said. “What we are in a position to do it to demonstrate, through action, what we’re committed to and that is what we will do moving forward.”
Moving forward, there will be more meetings with student leaders to address situations like these and to try and avoid them, Sumner said. But all the speech that has been displayed through this group chat is worth looking into.
It is the task of those investigating to look at the messages and not only emphasis specific chats. Giving equity to the entire conversation means there are no highlighting specific messages and leaving others out.
“You are a student all the time and the code of conduct and policies apply all the time,” Sumner said. “And when you take an oath or a leadership role, there is a recognition that you are that leader all the time.”
