Also I don’t believe he ever defended the Louis XVI, though he certainly did have a relationship with him (or at least his ministers) from obtaining French involvement in the American Revolution

It´s a documented fact, that Paine was arrested in 1793, for treason. Specifically for opposing the death penalty and the execution of Louis XVI.
He was arrested by the Jacobin regime for being part of the Girondist club
