Does anyone know of any european companies selling freeze dryers?

2020-02-24 15:26:11 UTC

I know harvest right in the US offers international shipping but after import taxes it would work out hugely expensive

I'm approaching capacity for bottled water storage in my tiny apartment; that'll put me at about 2 months' worth, hardly substantial. Any recommendations for how to make the most of the rest of my limited space? ||My first real milestone goal is one year's worth of food/water.||
I'm considering a WaterBob but I don't want to rely on that too heavily, since they look pretty flimsy and, you know, only work if you fill it up before water lines go down.

reverse osmosis filter from amazon and rainwater collection stuff

Like the post above mentioned about water myths, plastics rated 1, 2 and 4, so if u have a 1-2 liter soda bottle, fill it up and put it in the closet, if that takes up too much space, maybe get something like a life straw, sawyer filter or any decent hand style or pump that you can backwash to clean. The smallest ones are pretty good like the Sawyer mini (pic) can filter around 100,000 gallons supposedly

I've used the same sawyer filter for almost 5 years now. I haven't gotten the hershey squirts from lake/river water yet, so I'll keep going until I can report when it quits being effective.

2020-02-26 12:35:19 UTC

what can they filter tho

2020-02-26 12:35:32 UTC

can they filter shit like bacteria or just dirt particles

2020-02-26 12:36:51 UTC

he said river water which is typically chock full of a nice combo of shit

2020-02-26 12:37:04 UTC

eh

true

(Do not clean the filters with your bare hands, the outside of the ceramic filters can have concentrated levels of contaminants after extended use including heavy metals, organic compounds and more)

quick question: potatoe growing is a easy as going to my local food market, buy some potatoes that still have some roots (tubers) attached to them and putting them in the dirt? (watering etc. but thats a no brainer)

2020-02-26 13:33:18 UTC

That's pretty damn close. Let the potatoes sprout first. You can even cut a potato up and plant each sprout individually, thereby turning one potato into 5 plants

2020-02-26 13:33:37 UTC

The potato itself is a tuber

would it be possible to replicate the moisture farms in starwars? basically a bigger version of the solar still

Just a note on Sawyer filters and others like them (not ceramic ones), they are adapted from kidney dialysis filters. They sell different micron levels. Basically as they get used, the filter clogs up and slows down. You just backwash them with filtered water and it flushes them out and good to go again. That's how they have the 100k gallon rating.

did someone mention there was a place you could buy near expiration date MREs in bulk for a decent price?

2020-02-27 01:31:02 UTC

OH searched, @UncleDrMrBaby you said locally, what kind of place is it?

2020-02-27 01:31:19 UTC

do they have a website maybe

2020-02-27 01:32:28 UTC

They do not have a website. It’s like a hardware store and a milsurp store had an abortion.

2020-02-27 01:34:32 UTC

interesting, i think there's a milsurp store a couple towns away, but ill check around for something closer

2020-02-27 01:34:36 UTC

thanks

2020-02-27 01:59:54 UTC

if u could only grow potatoes, would you grow normal potatoes or sweet potatoes? or which would u give priority to?

@Lizard regular potatoes; neutral flavor means more versatility, and I think they're more calorically dense
