I have to go back & re-read a couple of times almost for each page
well "nationalism" really goes back ot Napoloeon in the modern sense, it was a fuction of the need to get eveyone in a country behind a "total war" as von Klauswitz said in "Vom Kreig"
So the predecessor (obviated by nationalism) was competitive feudalism?
(competitive because that would preclude getting everyone in the country behind a total war)
like Germany before unification, basically
yea.
pretty much you nailed it
the thing is though, he does look at smaller societies that were fragmented such as the Holy Roman Empire, or Prussa and decides that Germany and Poland are not nations in the ethne sense of the word, and instead calls for the dissolution of those two states
though, there is an interesting question to be raised here.... if the Germans aren't a true people, then how can it be claimed that Jews, which are in diaspora across the continant, are a unique people? How can you say X group attempted to exterminate Z group if Z group wasn't a people either?
it's true! I imagine many Jews are less ethnically Jewish than you are ethnically German.
But in a way he's right - the "German" identity is more abstract and seems weaker than more local (e.g. Bundesland level) identities
as in my anectode with "can an Afghan be an X?"
true. i think we will have some great discussion on this book! so excited to see it happening
I hope we get about 10 people for the first discussion on PP. I also posted an event on GoodReads so people will know where we will be. but i didn't pos the discord link.
maybe add it to the event description?
yea, go for it. I'm getting a little tired from today's food. i overate turkey and biscuits. but it was sooo good with the gravey o it
haha, ok
what do they eat in Germany for Christmas dinner? We eat turkey and ham
pumpkin pie, sweet tea, stuffing (bread and vegetables baked for like 2 hours)
not sure about other families, but we always had something different each time
but sausages are popular imo
For us, it's usually Turkey and Ham. Saussages and Schnitzel and Brautwurst are every day foods
and sauerkraut 😃
ahh yes saurekraut with mustard and peppers
have you ever had i think it is spelled "nachtwurst"? we had that at a gathering at my cousin's house this afternoon. and it was pretty good
haha, nope
"night sausage"?
yea it's' really black, and has blood in it
served cold too
you slice it, and put it on some like gouda cheese and make a sandwich with it
i know Blutwurst, "blood sausage" - but I'm not a fan tbh
lately I prefer good old Weißwürstl', Bavarian style
with Sauerkraut, Bread and Weißbier ideally
*bread
German capitalization...
That's one thing to love about Germany btw - delicious bread, everywhere
No other place I've been to compares in terms of bread choice and quality
yea, we have a shop around here that makes fresh breads European style and my favorite are the German/Polish/Czech breads. they are perfect, much better than say italian or french bread
Belated my time but happy Christmas Gab
