I don't know much about philosophy so I don't know about the path this kind of reasoning took

2018-09-12 01:11:58 UTC

Yeah, I've seen that

2018-09-12 01:12:19 UTC

But couldn't you argue that modernism also paved the way for post-modernism?

2018-09-12 01:13:37 UTC

Yes, post-modernism is a direct response to modernism and its failings. Modernism cannot answer the hard problem of consciousness, and cannot answer questions about how you should live your life.

2018-09-12 01:15:08 UTC

If we're to believe JBP, ancient texts and myths give us a path to how to live our lives

2018-09-12 01:15:55 UTC

Maybe science just hasn't cracked the problem of how to explain consciousness *yet*

2018-09-12 01:16:12 UTC

JBP is trying to do something that needs to be done but he's out of his depth. Everyone is.

2018-09-12 01:16:41 UTC

That makes sense

2018-09-12 01:17:10 UTC

How can you come up with a way in which to tell everyone how to live their lives

2018-09-12 01:17:52 UTC

There may not be one way. One thing we're beginning to discover is that human minds are not uniform in perception and cognition.

2018-09-12 01:18:32 UTC

You probably saw Tim's recent video on 'inner voice' or seen the NPC meme that sprang from that article.

2018-09-12 01:18:40 UTC

I did

2018-09-12 01:18:52 UTC

I have the inner voice but I know people who don't

2018-09-12 01:19:02 UTC

They looked at me like I was crazy lol

2018-09-12 01:19:20 UTC

But I also tend to talk to myself out loud

2018-09-12 01:19:22 UTC

That's not a new thing, and it's only a tiny piece of the literature on the subject, but the important thing is that people in a very literal way think differently. They perceive differently.

2018-09-12 01:20:20 UTC

Some people may actually believe in what we label social construction.

2018-09-12 01:20:41 UTC

That if a belief is universally and legitimately held, it becomes objective reality.

2018-09-12 01:21:44 UTC

This is probably not a large segment of the population, but it would explain a lot of strange social phenomenon if it was a measurable minority.

2018-09-12 01:22:51 UTC

I find it really hard to wrap my head around it to the point where I still have a hard time entertaining the possibility. It's like they believe they become invisible if they cover their eyes.

2018-09-12 01:23:11 UTC

Or if nobody sees them eat cake they can't be getting fat.

2018-09-12 01:26:42 UTC

People who have radically different modes of cognition from one another may not be able to operate in the same philosophical framework. If one believes that the world is socially constructed, a philosophy that is libertarian isn't going to work for you because if others are free to believe what they choose they might invalidate your existence.

2018-09-12 01:34:07 UTC

But I guess on the other hand if one believes in an external objective reality that exists independent of oneself, one has to make a leap of faith that the information available about that reality is accurate. Like Mickey Mouse said: 'hypocrite that you are, for you to trust the chemicals in your brain to tell you that they are chemicals'

2018-09-12 01:38:46 UTC

That's a very interesting way of looking at things

2018-09-12 01:39:17 UTC

That some people are so radically different in how they inherently think that they can't operate in the same framework

2018-09-12 01:40:27 UTC

I think that's a part of the conflict we see today. But there are also people who are just completely amoral and opportunistic who are taking advantage of these differences for pure power.

2018-09-12 01:40:58 UTC

Probably

2018-09-12 02:43:40 UTC

The tolerant left.

2018-09-12 03:48:11 UTC

Tolerant liberals strike again

2018-09-12 04:41:22 UTC

hey guys, does anybody know a good way to look up old articles? Searchable Archives dating back a decade or so?

2018-09-12 04:41:53 UTC

im trying to find some articles from about 2008 related to traffic safety in very different towns

2018-09-12 04:45:06 UTC

iirc there was a town called "Slough" that ran a traffic experiment (at the time was named "Safety Town" iirc), likewise across the pond another town named "Drachten" ran a opposing traffic experiment (Slough added signage and increased rules, Drachten did the opposite.), Drachtens approach by all metrics appeared to have won out, massively while Slough held and i believe still has one of the highest accident rates in its region.
Various articles addressed reasons this happened but although i can find articles relating to Drachtens benefits, i cannot find articles which point out Slough's Faults (To the contrary i can find a page that says the "Safety Town" experiment was a success, when its accident rates clearly prove it is not.) So thus im trying to find articles that i think are not listed anymore due to being 10+ years old

Jesus fuck

2018-09-12 10:27:58 UTC
