De-colonize science because science can't explain why this voodoo shaman claims he can shoot lightning from his staff
Checkmate atheists
Sorry... "from *xir's* staff". Let's not be assuming anyone's gender
With a sufficiently post-modernist world view maybe xe can shoot lighting from xir staff.
If everything is socially constructed, and everyone believes that lightning is coming out of the staff, then who can say it isn't?
What even is lightning?
>avian flu
>swine flu
>monkeypox
This is an example of socially constructed reality.
For most of human history this is how we functioned in the world.
Stop eating monkeys
I'd like to see your credentials, xir
Decolonize your understanding of science
The very beginnings of post-modernism were the attempts of the devout Christians to slow or halt the advance of modernity and rationality.
I don't know if that would be considered postmodernism or a form of very old religious conservatism
Clearly they did not anticipate what their philosophy would become.
The Christian revivals and shakers would be pre-modern.
I don't know much about philosophy so I don't know about the path this kind of reasoning took
Yeah, I've seen that
But couldn't you argue that modernism also paved the way for post-modernism?
Yes, post-modernism is a direct response to modernism and its failings. Modernism cannot answer the hard problem of consciousness, and cannot answer questions about how you should live your life.
If we're to believe JBP, ancient texts and myths give us a path to how to live our lives
Maybe science just hasn't cracked the problem of how to explain consciousness *yet*
JBP is trying to do something that needs to be done but he's out of his depth. Everyone is.
That makes sense
How can you come up with a way in which to tell everyone how to live their lives
There may not be one way. One thing we're beginning to discover is that human minds are not uniform in perception and cognition.
You probably saw Tim's recent video on 'inner voice' or seen the NPC meme that sprang from that article.
I did
I have the inner voice but I know people who don't
They looked at me like I was crazy lol
But I also tend to talk to myself out loud
That's not a new thing, and it's only a tiny piece of the literature on the subject, but the important thing is that people in a very literal way think differently. They perceive differently.
Some people may actually believe in what we label social construction.
That if a belief is universally and legitimately held, it becomes objective reality.
This is probably not a large segment of the population, but it would explain a lot of strange social phenomenon if it was a measurable minority.
I find it really hard to wrap my head around it to the point where I still have a hard time entertaining the possibility. It's like they believe they become invisible if they cover their eyes.
Or if nobody sees them eat cake they can't be getting fat.
