2018-08-15 20:57:48 UTC

True story, in the Year of Our Lord 1386, a knight allegedly raped another knights wife.

2018-08-15 20:58:03 UTC

So he challenged him to a trial by combat

2018-08-15 20:58:24 UTC

It was such a big deal that the king himself had the fight delayed so he could come back from another country to watch it

2018-08-15 20:59:11 UTC

The accused rapist died. Dagger to the eye

2018-08-15 20:59:23 UTC

so he was guilty

2018-08-15 20:59:35 UTC

never rape another man's woman

2018-08-15 21:03:05 UTC

However under French law at the time, had he lost, his wife would have been burned at the stake for a false accusation of rape

2018-08-15 21:03:12 UTC

Nothing wrong with that of course

2018-08-15 21:05:28 UTC

He fought im several wars after the trial, including against the Turks, where he was killed

2018-08-15 21:12:02 UTC

what was his name? he sounds like he had quite the life story

2018-08-15 21:12:51 UTC

Sir Jean de Carrouges, vs Sir Jacques Le Gris

2018-08-15 21:13:08 UTC

and france used to burn women at the stake for false accusations of rape? I really cannot argue with that, whatsoever. Fuck, i wish we still did it today.

2018-08-15 21:13:14 UTC

Yeah

2018-08-15 21:13:51 UTC

It would cut down on a lot of problems

2018-08-15 21:14:42 UTC

Even to the present day we don't know if Le Gris was guilty or not.

2018-08-15 21:15:05 UTC

The laws when it comes to rape accusations are so unbelievably crooked and guilty until proven innocent its not even funny, they are designed to stack the odds against the accused sky high and in the case hes proven innocent the court usually finds a way to fine them or stick them on probation anyway then sends them home, not even a sorry.

2018-08-15 21:15:28 UTC

We do know that de Carrouges got fucking rich afterwards though. The king and parliament gave him a shitload of money, he got a job as the king's bodyguard, bigass pensions etc

2018-08-15 21:16:21 UTC

sounds like a case of winning the kings favor

2018-08-15 21:16:44 UTC

Yeah King Charles was all about it

2018-08-15 21:17:56 UTC

The roads in Flanders were shit so he sent a messenger begging them to delay the fight so he could get home in time to watch, and thousands of people of all classes came to see it

2018-08-15 21:19:47 UTC

duels over stuff like that was so par for the course in a lot of Europe, two consenting men settling their dispute in mutual combat, i don't see what's wrong with that where it had to be done away with.

2018-08-15 21:19:57 UTC

Even one of our founding fathers died in a duel didn't he? hamilton?

2018-08-15 21:21:17 UTC

Yep

2018-08-15 21:21:22 UTC

Burr-Hamilton duel

2018-08-15 21:21:58 UTC

Running for NY governor, Hamilton called Burr unworthy, so he challenged Hamilton to a duel

2018-08-15 21:22:50 UTC

As an aside, de Carrouges was killed in action fighting the Turks when he was about 66 years old.

2018-08-15 21:22:57 UTC

That's a bad motherfucker

2018-08-15 21:24:14 UTC

66, jesus. they don't make them like they used to
