Shouldn't they establish a functional local government before being admitted into the union?
PR has "voted" to become a state a few times I think.
They can't take responsiblity for themselves, so they can keep blaming the US gov for everything
But I wonder if it would be better to just cut them loose. I mean, according to vox they are in this position because of racism. Let's give them back their own country. Just let app current residence keep us citizenship.
I'm guessing that close inspection of their finances would show massive corruption.
My understanding is that the win didn’t count because a certain percentage of the population has to vote for Puerto Rico to become a state. Because of this those that wish to remain just don’t vote. This means the Statehood people win the vote, but it doesn’t count.
Their GINI coefficient is near that of Mexico.
That’s what Puerto Rican’s tell me anyway
Much higher than that of the US. Lots of wealth disparity, lots of deficit spending. Much of that borrowed money is probably going right into the pockets of officials.
This is correct.
The people campaigning against US statehood insisted that those who did not want to join the United States not vote.
As such, an absentee vote was then considered a vote of 'no'.
So instead of having a proper metric of the will of the people
you have the poll results, and the number of non-voters
The bigger issue in the PR case is that the opposition party called for a boycott of the vote *and* they split the non-statehood vote (it was: statehood, independence or remain a territory) . Unsurprisingly, the vote was near unanimous in favor of statehood.
So the results can be taken with a grain of salt of being representative. The vote did pass near unanimously, but we know the sample was incredibly and intentionally biased.
lol
i wouldnt put it past her to make such an ignorant comment although not to such an extreme
Is there a point to a university when you must fear sharing your thoughts?
Well some societies still put alot of value in degrees
Not that its right, but if your future career is at risk you shouldnt blame the individual for wanting to preseve that option
Babylon Bee is amazing. It's everything The Onion is or was but with a different slant as the Onion has gotten increasingly political and lost balance. Babylon Bee isn't exactly balanced either, but fo to both and you can laugh at both sides of the aisle again!
“ Trump allies fume at McCain memorial address, urge counter attack” by Lorraine Woellert on Politico
Politico article using McCain’s funeral to attack Trump, also spreads fake news. It claims that “ McCain played a key role in passing along a dossier to the FBI ...” . This is deceptive. McCain did get the dossier from Steele and give it to the FBI in Jan 2017 but Bruce Ohr started working with Steele in July 2016 and quickly introduced him to the FBI. By the time McCain got the dossier to the FBI , it had already been used in FISA submissions multiple times. This is an attempt to heighten the credibility of the dossier by associating it with someone the media has been pushing as a hero after his death.

I'm glad trump is staying quiet.
He doesn't have to speak ill of him, it serves no purpose.
Definitely.
let us do the talking for him
FUCK MCCAINb
hes in hell right now
fucking warmonger piece of shit
😐
Naw. He’s bombing the pearly gates with napalm.
McCain is better forgotten.
The only reason the left is fawning over him is because he was a repeated traitor to his conservative base.
It's like 'lovebombing'
Yeah heaping praise on McCain is a tactic for the left to attempt to peel away NeverTrumpers ahead of the mid-terms.
I love McCain because he hates Drumpf #resist (even though he voted for a war that murdered 500,000 innocent civilians (mostly muslims))
The guy was also a complete failure as a presidential candidate. I don't know how many NeverTrumpers are going to be legitimately nostalgic for a guy who was consistently praising his opponent Obama while simultaneously appearing like a doddering old fool.
the rhetoric that i should hate him as a person because i may not agree with his views is meh to me, but in his case i think its hard for me to get emotionally opposed to him since my grandfather seems kind of similar, yet i knew he was a great dude
i'd admit to being undecided about military intervention. i don't like it but grown up hearing why it *can be* just from people close to me
