Sargon of Akkad kinda deserved to get banned on Patreon and kinda not. Yes, Patreon has been selective, and that's wrong. Yes, it was off-platform so that makes it a little iffier. But people are acting like it's ridiculous for social media companies to ban people who use the n-word, and that's no different than TV of the past. Some regulation has always existed on different platforms whether that be radio, TV, etc. It's okay to do the same on the Internet, as long as people can get their ideas across.

2018-12-23 04:56:50 UTC

Well, the Patreon headquarters have a road in front of them and a fire department in town, so it's complicated /s

2018-12-23 04:57:31 UTC

@Ranko Troll me all you want, but I'm speaking substance. You aren't. That speaks volumes.

2018-12-23 04:57:46 UTC

Well their actions completely contradicted what jack said in the Dave Rubin interview

2018-12-23 04:57:53 UTC

I'm memeing dude, chill lmao

I may be wrong, but if you are a CEO of a company, and you directly lie about what your platform does

2018-12-23 04:58:48 UTC

@Countess My point is broader than just Patreon and Sargon. I recognized that some of the specifics make it a little iffier in the Sargon case specifically, but I'm trying to speak about the principle of whether it's okay to ban people over using words like the n-word or not

2018-12-23 04:59:58 UTC

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the principle of complete free speech and no banning at all is what is being used to justify why bans are wrong, not just the specifics about Sargon's case

2018-12-23 05:00:12 UTC

I think the controversy comes from how quickly and silently they did it, as well as how he technically didnt break their company policy

2018-12-23 05:00:16 UTC

I think people are overcorrecting to fight against SJWs

2018-12-23 05:01:03 UTC

IM GONNA SAY THE N WORD

2018-12-23 05:01:05 UTC

I think people are mad because pateron is deciding what is acceptable and what isnt

2018-12-23 05:01:14 UTC

MRS OBAMA GET DOWN

2018-12-23 05:01:16 UTC

When they directly said that wasnt their job, just a few months back

2018-12-23 05:01:23 UTC

If Patreon doesn't decide, who does?

2018-12-23 05:01:32 UTC

Well they said they wouldnt do that

2018-12-23 05:01:33 UTC

funders ?

2018-12-23 05:01:35 UTC

Maybe the patrons?

2018-12-23 05:01:48 UTC

if people don't like it it won't get monnies

2018-12-23 05:02:00 UTC

If patreon was run by people that got mad at the word "cracker"

2018-12-23 05:02:12 UTC

and went around targeting podcasts that used it

2018-12-23 05:02:24 UTC

admittedly its not the same at all

2018-12-23 05:02:34 UTC

But its still their decision to own

2018-12-23 05:03:02 UTC

There is reason to ban without allowing just Patrons to decide for themselves. Patrons have to decide AFTER they hear something. Banning prevents something. There are kids younger than 10 who use Patreon. It's reasonable to try to keep the tone of conversation within a certain spectrum

2018-12-23 05:03:23 UTC

So his N word thing happened off of patreon

2018-12-23 05:03:55 UTC

I guarantee you if Patreon banned anybody who said Cracker the free speech crowd would be less happy, not happier

2018-12-23 05:04:15 UTC

People would become patrons **before** being well aware of the content they help fund ?

2018-12-23 05:04:23 UTC

Free speech for all, whether we like it or not.

2018-12-23 05:04:27 UTC

@Countess Yes. I'm trying to get you to talk about the principle but you're only resorting to talking about the specifics of one case

2018-12-23 05:04:38 UTC

@Illyrian Even 6 year-olds?

2018-12-23 05:04:46 UTC

Because I dont agree that is what the controversy is about

2018-12-23 05:05:08 UTC
2018-12-23 05:05:24 UTC

what?

2018-12-23 05:06:03 UTC

If you use the N word on twitter, and you get banned

2018-12-23 05:06:07 UTC

Im fine with it

2018-12-23 05:06:14 UTC

Its part of their policy

2018-12-23 05:06:25 UTC

Patreon specifically said they would not ban you for things off platform

2018-12-23 05:06:26 UTC

Even if you’re referencing a book?

2018-12-23 05:06:44 UTC

Well, technically, Patreon has left it open for them to choose whatever they want to do
