smells like appeal to authority fallacy to me

2018-08-19 19:28:49 UTC

I work in an art-related field but I don't consider myself an artist. Clients tell me to make specific things and I get paid to do it, so more of a craftsman than anything.

2018-08-19 19:28:56 UTC

there are no official qualifications to become an 'artist' that is the beauty of art

2018-08-19 19:29:02 UTC

I'm not the one coming up with the ideas, just executing it

2018-08-19 19:29:33 UTC

i just think its weird you are holding artists on some pedestal

2018-08-19 19:29:51 UTC

cooking is an art

2018-08-19 19:29:56 UTC

but I don't really have an issue with people calling anything art, my problem is mainly with those who will call one thing art and not another even though it's basically the same thing

2018-08-19 19:29:57 UTC

I consider someone an artist, if the layman can't remake it

2018-08-19 19:30:18 UTC

art isn't some magical unattainable thing only meant for a few

2018-08-19 19:30:32 UTC

art itself is for the masses to enjoy,

"being an artist" is for the few

2018-08-19 19:30:51 UTC

yes thats what i meant 'being an artist'

2018-08-19 19:31:12 UTC

doesn't have to be some rare city of gold only for the few

2018-08-19 19:31:13 UTC

imo

2018-08-19 19:31:41 UTC

being a *good* artist is another story

2018-08-19 19:32:12 UTC

art does not equal quality

2018-08-19 19:32:28 UTC

and has nothing to do with the definition

2018-08-19 19:32:41 UTC

well thats our difference then,

I consider "good artists" to just be artists, and people who arent "good artists", not to be artists

Its a difference in how we define "artist"

2018-08-19 19:32:59 UTC

thats fair if thats how you feel

2018-08-19 19:33:18 UTC

but there are a lot of legit artists who make art that i don't like, doesn't mean they aren't artists

2018-08-19 19:33:32 UTC

again, you are taking the authoritarian view

2018-08-19 19:33:54 UTC

i'm authoritarian because i define my terms differently?

2018-08-19 19:34:39 UTC

because you are giving yourself the authority to take away legitimacy of others creations based on your own opinion

2018-08-19 19:34:51 UTC

You're an authoritarian if you say I don't have a PHD in something I've never studied

2018-08-19 19:34:53 UTC

but hey, if thats how you think, thats how you think

2018-08-19 19:35:07 UTC

being a label isn't a status of legitimacy

2018-08-19 19:35:41 UTC

if you dont like someone's creation and say they aren't an artist, you are taking away legitimacy. i dont understand what you are missing

2018-08-19 19:35:58 UTC

So if i call you a pedophile, does that have any legitimacy too simply because i said it?

2018-08-19 19:36:04 UTC

what

2018-08-19 19:36:05 UTC

lol

2018-08-19 19:36:09 UTC

ok

2018-08-19 19:36:15 UTC

this convo has derailed

2018-08-19 19:36:18 UTC

Its the same principle

2018-08-19 19:36:32 UTC

If i have an opinion on someones qualifications of a label, theres no claim to any legitimacy

2018-08-19 19:36:34 UTC

it reminds me of the not using pronouns debate

2018-08-19 19:36:48 UTC

the mental gymnastics are too stronk for me

2018-08-19 19:36:53 UTC

If I can use words however I want, and you can't take that away from me without being authoritarian

2018-08-19 19:36:55 UTC

Its like calling Trump a racist, or fascist, or any of those fake news terms

They're not legitimate either, and just because they said it, doesn't somehow make it more so

2018-08-19 19:36:56 UTC

i will gracefully bow out, thank you

2018-08-19 19:37:10 UTC

mental gymnastics, listen to this one

2018-08-19 19:37:17 UTC

Then anyone can call you whatever, using their own definition
