I'm not actually in Texas rn, but I have lived there, if that counts

I was told this server is for nerds who are interested in other languages and cultures, and I'm a nerd who occasionally gets on a Duolingo kick and wishes I actually knew another language, so I figured I'd pop in.

I've started a small bit of Russian and German, made a very brief attempt at Japanese, and I took Spanish in school, so that one I've actually gotten somewhere. I'm just not very disciplined with it, keep jumping around or stopping entirely.

Tbh, my biggest problem with learning languages is just remembering vocabulary. Anything that isn't a cognate or well-known is just gone by the time I want to study again. That's the discipline issue, though, I'm sure I could do better if I was committed to one and kept at it.

IIRC, weren't the statues once painted? Or maybe they were way back, and then unpainted marble came into style? I can't recall.

I do remember that many of the statues we have are actually copies of the ancient ones

Japanese art is pretty great too, but all the good Japanese art is medieval or newer

It's just a very different style. I've never tried making any of it, so I wouldn't know which is harder to do. I'd imagine western art is the harder one, because holy shit the lighting and movement and just wow, it's complex and amazing, but I don't really know.

Better, because the clothing and lighting is much better, but it's very stiff and front-faced like medieval scenes are.

Alright folks, I've got a language question

I'm a Yank, and I speak English, but I'm interested in language and would love to learn other languages

I've noticed that most languages, notably German, have a sort of breathy consonant sound at times that I just seem incapable of producing

I'm curious how to make that sound, lol

Best example I can think of is like the word Admiral

In German I usually hear it with, like, an "h" sound between the d and m

And if I attempt to make that sound I just fail miserably, lol

That one is also hard for me

It's just generally difficult for me to make breathy consonants without getting tongue tied and just stopping the word in the middle, sounding like I'm hacking up a lougie, or starting a coughing fit.

So my attempts to speak other languages always have very English consonants, lol

I'll start with attempting to say German r right. Seems easier than others, though still weird. I feel like I pretty much don't use my throat at all to speak.
