Does the conflict in Yemen remind anyone of the Vietnam war?

2019-09-21 13:26:29 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The Saudi Arabian army's use of their equipment in this conflict eerily reminds me of how the Saigon regime dealt with their US Aid.

The Houthis seem to be adapting similar guerrilla tactics that the Viet Cong did minus all the trees and forests of course.

2019-09-21 13:37:23 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

God, I hope Trump has done his part on reading Johnson's foreign policy

2019-09-21 13:38:43 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Well the whole situation in the Gulf is just a Tonkin-like resolution away from escalating into a destructive conflict

2019-09-21 13:38:57 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Plus, I can't fathom the utter destruction it may cause to global economy

2019-09-21 13:40:02 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Also this war would pile up the already worsening immigrant and refugee crisis.

2019-09-21 13:41:13 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

To a point it just breaks and it's all out chaos. Imagine all the Yemenis, Iranians and Saudis adding to the Syrian refugees.
The West will pass it's breaking point, seeing the troubles the current immigrants are already causing. I doubt even the Left manages to keep their sanity with that whopping number of displaced people from that conflict.

2019-09-21 13:50:53 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Sweet karma for Iran I guess, it all comes back to that CIA backed coup all those years ago that removed a democratic president in favour of the Shah. All that sabre rattlers waiting for war against Iran seem to forget that it was the Western intervention in the coup that toppled President Mossadegh that eventually led to the Islamic Revolution and overthrow of their installed leader, the Shah.

2019-09-21 13:56:46 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

@yordanyordanov What's going on with Turkey tho? It seems to acting pretty rogue as a NATO member recently.

2019-09-21 13:57:55 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The recent talks with Russia regarding the Su 57 fighter jets makes the status even more tenuous as it already was.

2019-09-21 13:58:50 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Erdogan plans to create a neo Ottoman empire or something now?

2019-09-21 14:04:55 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

All the while it's even more uncertain times in Israel, Netenyahu's government is in grave danger of losing their majority. I wonder what Israel's future political influence will be now.

2019-09-21 14:08:04 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Especially considering Russia's own history with Islamists. Chechnya and Afghanistan.

2019-09-21 14:10:07 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

I mean Putin isn't that dumb to forget the mistake that the Soviets did in Afghanistan.
Who really "lost" that war in hindsight is so interesting now.

2019-09-21 14:11:44 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Putin's experience with Islamists so far is ruthless oppression tho.

2019-09-21 14:12:33 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Isn't Chechnya as bad as the Uighur regions of China?

2019-09-21 14:14:56 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Oh that's one thing the USSR didn't do I guess

2019-09-21 14:17:05 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

You mentioned some Greeks being Pro Russian, isn't this meaning thaf they have got their hands on both sides of the conflict in the Aegean Sea?

2019-09-21 14:18:25 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Jesus Christ, the fallout of the collapse of the USSR still feels to this day.

2019-09-21 14:37:52 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Damn it, now I wish Gorbachev had kept the Soviet Union alive lol, as blasphemous as it sounds

2019-09-21 14:38:37 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

God damn oligarchs rose to power only thanks to the traitorous Yeltsin.

2019-09-21 14:42:08 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

I seem to be an boomer idiot for thinking the world was somehow "more peaceful" back in the 80s. At least the hegemony was kept in check with two power blocs against each other, albeit the Soviet economy was cracking.
I mean Gorbachev was already planning to make harmony with the eastern republics only for them to turn their backs with their demands.

2019-09-21 14:44:41 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Meanwhile, I'm thinking what would be the stand of the Chinese on all of these. So far they haven't intervened much here, but something tells they will soon as a part of the "one belt one road" project.

2019-09-21 14:47:39 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Sometimes wonder, whose the scarier guy here

2019-09-21 14:47:44 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Xi Jinping or Putin?

2019-09-21 14:50:09 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

I'm actually an Asian, and we have some not so pleasant history with China. It's quite odd to say all of this as Russia has been a historical military ally of us for decades, even if my country has recently got C-17s and Apache choppers added to it's Air Force.

2019-09-21 14:51:51 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

I'm an Indian actually. US aid to Pakistan kinda disgusts me here, I mean why even bother modernizing their F-16s when they literally housed Osama Bin Laden in their backyard just some years ago?

2019-09-21 14:53:09 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Thanks lol

2019-09-21 14:54:11 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Kinda feels weird as we Indians are probably one of the best friends of the Ruskies since decades.

2019-09-21 14:55:43 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The bulk of all our armed forces are all Russian stuff. MiGs, Sukhois, T-72s, T-90s, you name it. It's only recently that we started to get some American equipment like the Chinook or the C-17, although we do have some European ones for sometime, like the Mirages and the brand new Rafales.

2019-09-21 14:57:39 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

We bought the S-400s despite all that Western threats lol.

2019-09-21 14:58:53 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Time for another "Lenin" to rise up I guess.

2019-09-21 14:59:14 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Not necessary a Bolshevik, but some figure charismatic enough.

2019-09-21 14:59:58 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Immigration crisis is the answer

2019-09-21 15:01:35 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

This conflict is also bad in India, the consequences of the Partition by the British to seperate the subcontinent into Pakistan and India on the basis of Hindu and Muslim majorities, are still borne to this day, with communal conflicts, especially in Kashmir, where it's a three battleground between us Pakistan, and China

2019-09-21 15:02:25 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Plus the Bangladeshi Muslim immigrant crisis hasn't stopped even after 1971, it continues even today.

2019-09-21 15:05:59 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Well, troop deployment has been there in the area ever since we were independent.
Modi recently revoked the special semi autonomous status given to the region to make it a federal state like the other states in India.

2019-09-21 15:07:29 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

To prevent mass Pakistani-sponsored insurgency

2019-09-21 15:08:26 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

To prevent the youth to be influenced by the militia groups

2019-09-21 15:09:26 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

I mean in the age of digital media, ideologies, news and information spread like wildfire. These groups have historically used them to influence many people to join the insurgency, and often these groups have popular support as a result of that.

2019-09-21 15:10:34 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The Pakkies are already trying their best in the UN to try to convince the international community to give a shit on this matter.

2019-09-21 15:12:33 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

He's harnessing the power of social media like no other. The influence of his party on the internet has influenced lots of my people

2019-09-21 15:16:56 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Can't really say, but there has been some controversial decisions lately.
The indifference towards people being killed for "beef" and the way those murderous cow vigilantes go scot free.
The NRC leaving many legitimate Indian citizens out of a recent state census in the state of Assam to weed out immigrants.
Modi's deputy recently making controversial statements to impose Hindi as the national language despite each states especially South India having cultures historically opposing that.

2019-09-21 15:18:00 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Suspicious arrests of opposition party leaders, also release of many criminal politicians, many of who were even given a parliamentary ticket

2019-09-21 15:18:25 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

No world leader seems to be "good" these days

2019-09-21 15:19:33 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Our economy is failing to take advantage of Trump's shenanigans with China. We seriously have a great opportunity to gain a lot in this trade war.

2019-09-21 15:21:47 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Some state governments are "Hindu"ising history though.
Like their disregarding the efforts of the Moghul empire for example

2019-09-21 15:22:10 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Some radicalists even believe the guy who shot Gandhi dead was a hero to the Hindus.

2019-09-21 15:23:40 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Nothing much as of late. South India has been relatively far ans free from the chaos of the north.

2019-09-21 15:23:55 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The only conflict is linguistic

2019-09-21 15:25:11 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Like Hindi can't be enforced on the south because historically the Aryan culture of the north is different from the south, so it really can't be much of a unifying national language

2019-09-21 15:27:06 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Well, a southern state recently had their CM thrown in favor of a pro Modi one because of the coalition collapsing.
But so far, there's been no controversial decision.
Apart from this, Modi's barely made a political impact in the south.

2019-09-21 15:27:27 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

It's all regional federal coalitions that hold power here

2019-09-21 15:29:09 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Business as usual

2019-09-21 15:30:11 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The southern states have generally done well, they have healthy literacy rates and much of the contribution to the service sector, especially IT, comes from here

2019-09-21 15:31:14 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

In fact, they're quite diverse from the north, so is the northeast.

2019-09-21 15:32:43 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The general image of the stereotypical Indian in Western society is generally of a Northerner, you know the typical "street shitter pajeet", the "creepy internet guy who's hungry for Bobs and Vagene", the "stereotypical accent", brown skin, Sikh turbans etc.

2019-09-21 15:34:16 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Ironically, one event which divided lots of Indians over the internet wasn't Pakistan or Modi

2019-09-21 15:34:25 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

It was a certain Swedish youtuber.

2019-09-21 15:35:36 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Her? PewDiePie lol, not Greta Thurnberg.

2019-09-21 15:36:42 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Lol the only Swede right now worth caring about is PewDiePie, or Zlatan Ibrahimovic (if you are a football fan)

2019-09-21 15:37:31 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Lol, the only Swedish people I know are the above two, and probably ABBA, but I don't even remember the name of the people in the band.

2019-09-21 15:38:16 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

ABBA is the only other group of Swedish people I know lol.

2019-09-21 15:39:20 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Greta Thurnberg is no Malala, but the whole media seems to think that some oil tycoon put a bullet in her head and made her a climate hero

2019-09-21 15:41:07 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Literally repeating the same ass words my elementary school textbook talks about climate change.

2019-09-21 15:42:23 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

What's so new and innovative in this girl that everyone's giving her a platform to speak about?
If anything it's a problem with society is that they keep forgetting what's quite obvious and regurgitated facts seem novel ideas now.

2019-09-21 15:42:59 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Hong Kong has kinda lost its economic relevance to the Chinese

2019-09-21 15:44:01 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Neighbouring Shenzhen has developed at a breakneck phase as a financial hub.

2019-09-21 15:44:35 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Well would you think China would actually do another Tiananmen Square @S K E L L Y Ivanthenotsoterrible

2019-09-21 15:45:53 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

The troops stationed so far in Shenzhen have been APCs with some troops, not exactly PLA regulars I guess tho.

2019-09-21 15:47:23 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

But unlike say, Xinjiang, for example, the stuff happening in Hong Kong can't be censored as badly as it is in the mainland. It's out for the world to see. I mean freedoms suddenly disappearing in Hong Kong certainly will raise eyebrows.

2019-09-21 17:20:22 UTC [Athens #other_politics]

Or Shenzhen or one of those cities where the social credit system runs rampant. You know those Chinese cities where your face and identity is doxxed in full public view on billboards for a traffic violation?

Also the Swastika is an important religious symbol in Hinduism. Hindus consider it an auspicious symbol of peace and prosperity.

Yeah, but actually I was surprised at first learning about World War 2 in school

I was in born into a Hindu family, and we used to have swastikas in the prayer room. I wondered why Hitler was such obsessed with India that he "stole" our symbol lol. I just remembered learning about the "real" Aryan invasion that time in school.

Of India after the Indus Valley Civ collapsed

@Tubby the Skelly Bones The Horten Ho 228 was pretty real, just was at the concept stage.

Almost could have.

I pose a question here- for us Asians, the imperial Japs committed as bad, if not far worse atrocities than the Nazis.

Why is the Imperial Jap flag isn't as "hated" or "cancelled' like what they try to do with the Southern flag or the Swastika

Even the Koreans or the Chinese who hate the Japs haven't really turned the screws on that one, or not?

Color swap it, and you get the Vichy french flag lol @ubermensch .

The Japs wanted to "unite" Asia into one empire.

Or they wanted to prove they were "superior" to the Westerners, militarily and in imperial power

Plus, the "incentive" to "free" the Asian countries from their Western colonizers, case point in Indochina, Philippines, India, Malaya, Indonesia etc.

Feel bad for Indochina, they initially saw the Japs as liberators only to be treated worse than the French. Towards some years into the Japanese occupation, they actually wanted the French back.

Actually, the Japanese ARE to blame for communism spreading to Asia. Leaders like Kim Il-Sung or Mao Zedong would never have risen if it weren't for the Jap's Asian expansion.

The reason the commies won the Chinese civil war was that the Kuomintang was distracted while fighting the invading Japs. It took a major chunk off the fighting forces of the Nationalists.

Kim Il-Sung's major manifesto was that he was the "savior" of Korea against the evil Japs. No other brownie point to sell himself other than that.

Many political groups in Japan, including PM Shinzo Abe's party, actually take pride in the Imperial Japanese period of history.

No wonder they having beef with Korea over the comfort women. They never want to hurt their pride of history over issues like this.

@Tubby the Skelly Bones Especially the iron cross lol. It is still a prominent symbol of the German military but people seem to have a problem with it, idk why.

In that logic, all Templar symbols are anti-semitic and racist because they are similar to that.

Completely missing the fact that in Germany it is still used in Gallantry awards and is the symbol of the Air Force.

In FUCKING GERMANY. GROUND ZERO.
