I've read through excerpts of this book before (so I suppose I will complete it), and I am wondering what sort of discussion will be held in two weeks?

I am a 22 year old male from Northern Ontario. I've lived among people who have shared the same traditionalist ideals as myself and, in the more recent part of my life, I settled in 3 towns from mostly urban areas. While I considered myself a man of independent people, I must admit that I had not thought critically of developing skills of nature and family preparing for what I think are the inevitable events of chaos in the future due to a widespread state of degeneracy across the West. I've been motivated to contribute in this community (alongside a group with similar ideals in my town) by seeing the disintegration of order and (what seemed to be ubiquitous at least 5 decades ago) family values first-hand in the city I worked in for a few months. I was not raised religiously in the usual sense during my childhood, but I have been versing myself in the Western Canon since college to make up for this weakness. I am going to study in medical school not long from now, though I hope I can contribute here as much as humanely possible throughout its duration.

Finished Spengler's Decline of the West a few weeks ago. I discussed the book with some old students too. I'm not too experienced in Philosophy of History at the moment, so I'm working on it right now.

@P14 Animal farm is one of the greatest satirical books I've read. I suppose you're familiar with 1984 as well?

I've recently been studying Philosophy of History, and I've found that supplements to such works are invaluable. On a similar note, there are few works that summate philosophy and its history to the degree that is possible to sufficiently understand both. For this I recommend Kenny's A New History of Western Philosophy. It was thoroughly useful. It is a good introduction to general philosophy and is relatively new, and I've got a digital (PDF) file if anyone is interested -- it is in four volumes.

I stumbled across an interesting quote (by Thucycides): "The State that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools."

@Polak A plan to add books one-by-one over time? Is there a base of books you have collected already in this list?

I've got a great many books to share.

1984 is definitely also necessary to read. I also read Animal Farm first. mostly because of its slim size, though I've had to reread it many times because of that same reason.

@P14 Have you read Spengler's Decline of the West yet?

I was discussing it earlier, and am hoping to find those who have already read it here.

@wizzy The guy who made that document calls himself a marxist. However, I've read through the document before, and it doesn't look bad. Very good material and chronology for introductory philosophy.

As someone that already has somewhat of an undergraduate-level understanding of philosophy, there was still a lot of useful knowledge (there is other good information too, such as which publishers to avoid when purchasing books and why).

We've had some discussion in <#362535345146953728> on making a list for reading. We need a service that allows members of this service to add and sort books by subject.

This should allow room for some chronology of books (like understanding different types of political ideas) and notes to guide people unfamiliar with those topics. The google document above is what may serve as a source of ideas for how to do this sort of organizing, I suppose.

How much sleep does everyone go for?

On average, I get about 8 hours, and I never go below 7. Though it took me a while to get around finding the optimal schedule.

Optimism is something that I never had inherently either, and I have been trying to cultivate it for a long time.

Just the amount of optimism that does not open the mind to delusion.

Any tips on milk consumption?

I need tips on buying local. Does anyone have first hand experience, I'm not too familiar. Generally the produce is expensive, so I suppose building a good relationship with who you're buying from is a good start.

Animal Farm is short in volume, so I think it fits your description.

I've found renaissance era music interesting lately.

I enjoy listening to choir music in generally too. Recently I've mostly been listening to music of only instruments.

I try not to go higher than 4 consecutive hours. Staring at a monitor is very stimulating.

I went for 2 weeks with only breakfast each day and it had interesting effects (not in an attempt to lose weight).

Agreed. Good site for math related topics (not so much for humanities and soft sciences).

@Rin Only eating dinner is a lot different from only eating breakfast (and the former carries a lot of health risks).

I used to have a loss of appetite for about 6 months and it was due to minor kidney problems.

I can attest to how great cranberry juice is.
