The Mark 32 โZuniโ Rocket has been know to misfire and detonate, since, two years after the USS Forrestral Fire, a similar incident occurred aboard the USS Enterprise, which had detonated while strapped to the aircraft.
Apparently, the rocket was missing the safety pin that would normally keep it from firing, which, when the aircraft was switched from external to internal power mode, caused a misfire and led to the missile firing off. This was made even worse by the fact the entire deck was filled with aircraft getting ready to deploy.
In that case, it was the person installing the bombs who may have accidentally removed the pin at some point or had not attached it back before allowing for the aircraft to go fully functional.
What caused the incident was a series of mistakes made worse by improper loading of the ordinance and the improper fire control procedure the firefighting crew employed, which actually worsened the incident and caused the later bomb detonations.
Most importantly, *no one* was charged in the case because it was deemed an accident. Captain Beling was absolved if any wrong doing as well as any officers and crew members involved, since the aforementioned fire was a pure accident and the officers commanding the ship did everything they could to prevent the situation from getting worse.
So, no. He wasnโt responsible for the explosion. Rather, a lack of proper training across the board was one of the major problems that resulted in the fire and subsequent detonations.
