If it did exist as described by the press, it would be visible by satellites, I challenge anyone to find a picture of it.

I've seen youtube videos of people motoring in capable boats out to dredge up plastic, and they basically had to motor around for more than an hour with a huge net, and they picked up maybe a mason jar half full of plastic bits.

It's not an object that is visible like that, it's just a place where the currents collect trash and there is more of it than elsewhere.

I've also seen youtube videos of people who cruise the northern middle pacific, and they see maybe 1-2 noticeable pieces of plastic per hour, travelling at 4-5 knots... that means at most say 4-8 pieces per square nautical mile... not much.

also, the bigger pieces are LOADED with sea life, to the point that they're basically floating reefs.

one of my buds from the army went to honduras. he asked his guide where he could throw away an empty water bottle. the guide, in clear disgust, took the bottle from his hand and threw it down. the idea of a designated place for garbage offended him

when I was in Iraq, we camped along side a border fort. Our job was to train them. Soon after arriving, one of our first duties was to clean up the place like a real military site. As we walked around their fort picking up their garbage, wearing latex gloves because human shit was involved, one of the iraqis openned the door and flung a trash can full of garbage and shit out onto the ground we were cleaning.

I'm perfectly well aware that people are disgusting and throw shit on the ground.

There is more trash in these gyres *than there is in other parts of the open ocean far away from sources of trash.* This doesn't need to be some controversial or politicized thing. There's an area where ocean currents converge and sink, and the garbage that floats stays on the surface and builds up. End of story, not the end of the world. I'm not asking to raise your taxes to clean it up.

Personally I expect plastic-eating bacteria or some other natural adaptation to pretty much take care of it eventually.

Yeah, it’s just physics. You can open up an ocean current map right now that shows surface currents. Where do you think things go when they’re floating on them? Anyway, I think the solution is probably in AI and robotics. Once we have AI capable of reliably sorting those materials, they could be collected by solar powered robots. There may even beA financial incentive to do so if gathering of the material can be made cost effective enough.

There are ground-based and sea based bacteria that eat plastic, UV exposure also destroys plastic. This is why plastic lawn chairs have to be either painted or treated to last any longer than a year or so.
