Rapper Akon is building a new futuristic โCrypto city,โ in Senegal, which will trade exclusively in his own digital cash currency called AKoin.
The US-born singer, who is of Senegalese descent, says his futuristic city will be built on a 2,000-acre land gifted to him by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall.
According to its official website, the city will be a five-minute drive from the West African stateโs new international airport.
While the city project is still in development, AKoin is expected to launch early July.
The singerโ real name Aliaume Thiamโ unveiled plans for the city and his currency during a panel at the Cannes Lions festival of creativity, which ended on Friday.
Akon, 45, is more recognized as a business man than a musician these days.
His most recent venture is Akon Lighting Africa which is providing solar power to African countries.
Now he has turned his attention to digital currencies and its underlying blockchain technology. Akon argues that blockchain can enable Africans to become less dependent on their governments.
โI think that blockchain and crypto could be the saviour for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the peopleโฆ Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology offer a more secure currency that enables people in Africa to advance themselves independent of the government,โ Akon a the event held in the French city of Cannes.

His views were echoed by participants at the MEST Africa Summit, where a group of tech experts gathered last week to discuss โtrends, challenges and opportunities affecting markets across the continent.โ
Tricia Martinez, CEO of zero-fee money app WALA, noted that almost 94% of transactions on the continent are still cash-based.
She blamed the fees charged by financial institutions on transactions as a major setback for adoption.
โZero fee is how weโre going to solve financial inclusion,โ Martinez said.
While attention is given to unbanked Africans, the experts also noted that an increasing number of underbanked Africans had already given up on the financial system due to its inefficiencies and high fees.
Campbell on the other hand believe the shortcomings of Africaโs banks are creating spaces for blockchain to fill.
โThe future is transactional. Blockchain will do for payments what the internet has done for information,โ Campbell said.

WASHINGTON (WJLA) โ A person was arrested after they made a bomb threat and committed hate crimes near the White House in D.C. Saturday, according to authorities.
Secret Service says they were told at around 9:05 p.m. ET that a suspect threatened someone in Lafayette Square and told them he had an "explosive device" in his backpack. D.C. Police checked the backpack and determined there was nothing dangerous inside, officials say.
The suspect was arrested for making terroristic threats, hate crimes, and threats to do bodily harm and D.C. Police took him in for processing.

People have accused police of staging a search of a man outside of Nookโs Barbershop so they could justify a stop and frisk on others. The June 13 incident was captured on video.
Officers searched a man who had just walked up to the scene and found a gun on him. It was a BB gun, police now say.

BOISE, ID (KBOI) โ The Boise Police Department reported nine people were in the hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, after they were stabbed at an apartment complex Saturday night.
Officers took the suspect into custody where he was questioned. They said he is a 30-year-old man, but have not released his name.

Boise Police Chief Bill Bones said some of the victims are members of Boise's refugee community. The victims range in age. Some were found inside the Wylie Lane Apartments complex, others were found in the nearby parking lot.
Investigators do not know the suspect's motive and crews were searching a nearby canal for evidence late Saturday night. Ada County Dispatchers received a call about a man with a knife around 8:45 p.m.
A tweet from Boise Police said, "Officers are still investigating why the suspect targeted these individuals."
We haven't had anything involving this amount of victims in a single attack in Boise in the history of the department. Obviously it's something you hope never comes to your city," Bones said in a statement.
"You can imagine this is a very tight-knit community here in this apartment complex. The attack had a devastating effect on the people," Bones continued. He said the police department will do everything possible to immediately provide services to the victims and their families and work with them in the coming days and weeks.

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) โ Boise police have identified the man arrested for a stabbing that injured nine people Saturday night, including six children.
Police say Timmy Kinner, 30, of Los Angeles, was arrested and charged with nine counts of felony aggravated battery and six counts of felony injury to a child.
Officers say 4 of the nine people have life-threatening injuries. Some of the victims are members of the refugee community. Police say Kinner is not a refugee.
Investigators say the preliminary evidence is showing that Kinner was a temporary resident at an apartment complex at State Street and Wylie Lane, where the stabbings happened.
Police say he was asked to leave the apartments Friday.
The motive fro the stabbings is still being investigated.
Police say there will be a press conference Sunday afternoon with the latest information.

The 3-day event is taking place at the Reynolds Center at TU.
The convention began Friday and runs through Sunday.
