Tricia Martinez, CEO of zero-fee money app WALA, noted that almost 94% of transactions on the continent are still cash-based.
She blamed the fees charged by financial institutions on transactions as a major setback for adoption.
“Zero fee is how we’re going to solve financial inclusion,” Martinez said.
While attention is given to unbanked Africans, the experts also noted that an increasing number of underbanked Africans had already given up on the financial system due to its inefficiencies and high fees.
Campbell on the other hand believe the shortcomings of Africa’s banks are creating spaces for blockchain to fill.
“The future is transactional. Blockchain will do for payments what the internet has done for information,” Campbell said.

Crypto is internet boom for Africa’
But Rasheed Alabi, a risk management analyst, says Africans see cryptocurrencies as a means of achieving financial independence and escaping the continent’s ailing economies.
“We missed the internet boom, crypto is another opportunity for us,” Alabi says.
With African governments tightly controlling several sectors including banking and internet access, Africa’s crypto evangelists say blockchain offers an instrument that the government cannot regulate.
“Governments around the world are already losing their voice when it comes to becoming their citizens’ financial and security advisers. People don’t trust the government anymore and the global liberalist movement is fast rising,” Alabi told CNN.
Regaining trust

In Ghana, it is being deployed by the land registry to tackle fraud. Kenya is boosting remittances with the technology while in South Africa, it is being used for identity verification.

WASHINGTON (WJLA) — A person was arrested after they made a bomb threat and committed hate crimes near the White House in D.C. Saturday, according to authorities.
Secret Service says they were told at around 9:05 p.m. ET that a suspect threatened someone in Lafayette Square and told them he had an "explosive device" in his backpack. D.C. Police checked the backpack and determined there was nothing dangerous inside, officials say.
The suspect was arrested for making terroristic threats, hate crimes, and threats to do bodily harm and D.C. Police took him in for processing.

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — For the last two weeks, the 5200 block of Sheriff Road, NE has been the scene of tension between DC Police and residents.
People have accused police of staging a search of a man outside of Nook’s Barbershop so they could justify a stop and frisk on others. The June 13 incident was captured on video.
Officers searched a man who had just walked up to the scene and found a gun on him. It was a BB gun, police now say.

Those who were there say they didn’t know the man and they believe he was planted by police so they could search everyone else without warrants. Police found nothing on the other people.
Residents say it was an illegal stop-and-frisk.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (ABC7) — There were lots of tears at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis on Friday afternoon as the congregation paid tribute to Wendi Winters.
“This is a terrible and a sad day,” Rev. John Crestwell Jr. said.
The talented writer was one of five staff members killed at the Capital Gazette on Thursday.
Winters’ daughter said she was a woman with many beautiful stories.
“People were always telling her that she should write a book and now she’ll never have that opportunity,” Winters Geimer said.
Outside of the newsroom, Wendi Winters spent her time saving hundreds of lives.
Since 2004, she has organized several blood drives with the Red Cross.
