Any position that wields authority or control over another is corrupting.

Sadly i don't think this is often true, most center libs will quietly dislike their own but still vote for them, it varies based off demographics and whatnot id assume.
The only one that you really can argue for are the ones *actually* implied by the paradox of tolerance. Which has to deal not with "tolerance" in the modern sense of the word but in things like those that would kill off ideas like freedom of speech.

Socialism or Communism means seizing of private property and fruits of labor by the government. That means your homes, cars, etc are taken by the government. You will also maybe 20% of your paycheck if they are feeling generous, not to mention that they can easily de-platform and censor the news because they own it. The people would be clueless to what is really happening and will suffer. The Economy would tank because there is no free market anymore because the government owns it, leading to massive inflation like we seen in Venezuela. They would then start printing money to try to off-set that inflation, but it will in the end make it even worse.

California believes they alone have the right to tell other states how to live their lives and believe they are superior than the other states. Hell they call the central states "Fly Over States" meaning they believe our voice isn't worth it.
Not only that, they paint large swaths of the central states as bigots and fascists who are in large numbers, never mind the FBI states that states there is only 10K of them combined across the nation.

At this point the awkward geography is the only thing keeping the country together. If there were good defensible terrain features that aligned with the ideological break points I think separation would be the best option.

Heck earlier this year, the Democrats tried to break up California in attempt to get more seats in senate/house. This would have came to a grand total of 4 seats democrats and 2 Republican. This would have effectively given them a way to veto any legislation or laws that reach house or senate floors.
It was a power grab in disguise as trying to better account for their citizens.
Of course the GOP Congress was never going to fall for that.
