Water collection is difficult. Even if you are next to a stream, you better control the head of the stream or you are at the mercy of whoever can dam the stream. Rain water is iffy. Wells are doable assuming you can reach the water table. Food takes a lot of work, and needs to be set up with with year round production or high yield seasons with pretty damn long preservation methods.

And then there is defense
