Too rapid.

2020-04-06 09:09:52 UTC

yes, that's why these weird anomolies still exist

2020-04-06 09:10:20 UTC

in a perfect world you'd want them to develop gradually thus retain the character of the culture but modernising and dropping the stupid stuff

2020-04-06 09:10:26 UTC

but we don't live in a perfect world, it is how it si

2020-04-06 09:10:57 UTC

I came back home and then went back 2 years later and they had literally built a new part of the city

2020-04-06 09:11:16 UTC

there are allegedly new cities mostly empty

2020-04-06 09:11:33 UTC

I’ve heard that! These were not though

2020-04-06 09:11:50 UTC

think it's overcapacity due to their modernisation method

2020-04-06 09:12:13 UTC

and since it's central govmt controlled, they have to keep the accelerator down even if it means overproducing

2020-04-06 09:12:27 UTC

i'm guessing thats why, alongside the strategic element, they're building across africa too

2020-04-06 09:12:36 UTC

with little prospect of recouping, financially

2020-04-06 09:12:48 UTC

"what can we do with this overcapcity that could be useful to us"

2020-04-06 09:13:52 UTC

Zhaoqing was a pretty bustling place tbh

2020-04-06 09:14:17 UTC

would be, you've injecting some of the elements of capitalism on a society that can really use it

2020-04-06 09:14:30 UTC

in an underdeveloped society

2020-04-06 09:14:37 UTC

so there's a use and a thirst for it

2020-04-06 09:14:57 UTC

Yeah you can see that when you’re being looked at like an alien lol

2020-04-06 09:15:18 UTC

that's because western phases of this part of development are beyond living memory now

2020-04-06 09:16:03 UTC

I dunno it wasn’t that long ago. Gen x would have remembered the grey suits and bicycles

2020-04-06 09:16:30 UTC

A lot of people forget that for a great many people, the notion of moving to a town for steady low paid work would afford them the security and living standards barely dreamed of before

2020-04-06 09:16:36 UTC

But I think you are right that they’re memories of that time has probably been erased for many

2020-04-06 09:18:02 UTC

Was interesting people’s opinions of you would change depending on the politics of the day! Some would lose interest in you if you were not as well off as they assumed etc...

2020-04-06 09:18:29 UTC

I don’t think I will go back, despite many friends still living there.

2020-04-06 09:18:36 UTC

for many in a time of agrarian subsistence, you were one moderately bad bit of luck, or one fairly modest disaster away from starving to death

2020-04-06 09:19:00 UTC

it's a time when competence and trust were highly valued, and why you ended up with fierce loyalties, such as clans, barons etc

2020-04-06 09:21:47 UTC

Yeah not much of that now. Was introduced to a few officials who were dedicated and ran hotels for the local visiting government types. It was always a parade of “look at all these expensive things we have” almost like “this is what our blind devotion gets us”

2020-04-06 09:22:35 UTC

There was a time when all hotels serving foreigners were like that, pretty much anywhere

2020-04-06 09:22:44 UTC

Back in a time of respect and reputation

2020-04-06 09:22:49 UTC

Right have a 4 year old insisting I put my phone down and look at his alphabet words lol

2020-04-06 09:46:03 UTC

a little unkind

2020-04-06 09:50:14 UTC

A devastating blow... for the Tories...

More children than GCSEs? the fuck

2020-04-06 09:51:07 UTC

yep, she's a grandmother

2020-04-06 09:51:32 UTC

she's one of those highschool fuckups who had kids while underage/barely of age

2020-04-06 09:52:18 UTC

but if people were to hold that against her, they're abolishing the concept of redemption altogether

2020-04-06 09:52:28 UTC

and that make me feel uncomfortable

2020-04-06 09:52:32 UTC

i agree

2020-04-06 09:52:37 UTC

it's a shit argument against her

2020-04-06 09:56:16 UTC

neverhteless, part of her upbringing and is useful to know as it may flavour her thinking
