While yes, an early national lockdown would have had the best chance of avoiding both mass death and long-term economic disruption, the people wouldn't have complied.

The average person cannot comprehend the nature of exponential growth, let alone an incomplete picture of time-lagged exponential growth.
I've been raging pissed for the past month for him refusing to lockdown. Mrs is telling me that he understands human psych and that if he does it too early, he'll create more deaths and riots than later. I couldn't disagree more. My stance is self-preservation will trump over partying.

My problem being that the rise in confirmed cases in no way indicates the rate of spread. Because there are no confirmed cases over the month that the Chinese government *refused to admit it existed*.
