he wanted to be the protector of the slavs

Nicholas II was forced by his advisors to support Serbia against Austria, despite not wanting the war himself. He even made a direct phone call to Wilhelm II *begging* him not to support Austria's claim so to avoid their nations ending up at war.

Serbia was actually very lenient. When Austria sent them the final ultimatum, Serbia agreed to every single demand except for allowing Austrian police to operate in Serbian lands.
