The narrative that we ever, ever, EVER had anything like a "rape culture" is absolutely, horrific BS.
in nazi-occupied poland, the public rapes of girls and married women carried out would go unpunished, because the order does not care
(or actively endorses the rapes)
Yes, in instances were women were raped in war, even worse was done to men.
uhhh i think not
in India, there are regions where there are undesired minorities
who are subject to heinous victimization
without representation in law
I will point to clinton who wisely said "women are the primary victims of war"
wise politically, to be sure.
clinton would certanly know about women victims
Anyway, that's why I say shit is complicated in India
omg shillary
It's not as black-and-white as "rape is taken seriously" or "rape is not taken seriously at all!"
it's more like "some rapes are not taken seriously, and the determination of how seriously rapes are taken is not a fair one!"
Don't forget the countries where sex outside of wedlock is punishable by death, so if you get raped and people find out you're either marrying the guy or are ready for death
which is my contention with making broad, sweeping statements about the treatment of rape in some countries.
The Congo for sure has what you might call a "rape culture"
Rape used to carry the death penalty.
There was no point in western culture at which we did not take rape seriously.
in that society, public gang rape of people related to you is sometimes considered appropriate punishment.
I think even in that sense it's not that clear cut
punishment for what
what does it matter?
seems... pretty rough that your sister should be raped because you stole a crate of grapes
curiosity?
equally rough if you killed a man
yeah, i can't think of any crime that punishment would fit, so i'm just curious where their value system places it
I am not intimately familiar with local determinations of the appropriateness of sibling rape as a punishment
^cheating
if you cheat on your husband that seems to fit punishment.
Kinda uhh...
what
I mean, I get the logic.
you cheat on your husband so your family gets raped as your punishment?
It just seems that it creates a form of justice at the expense of another form of injustice
And I'd say forcible rape is more unjust than adultery
not that it would ever really be acceptable to produce a legal remedy which is at once an injustice to a third party, and justice for the plaintiff.
and ass rape seems fit punishment if you rape someone.
I'm not sure what kind of f'd up punishments there are in some kind of Islamic country, but I'm not going to bother my head about them in our countries.
Well, I can think of circumstances where that may not function
