Of course in reality it was because it was no longer a fairytale but a story with politics and good west and evil east.
So it was on the list of things that are not to be printed.
Unfortunately for them, one lady translated it in the early 80s and then the underground press distributed it all over. Funnily enough, save for minor revisions there really never was an attempt at making another translation. Seems we've all agreed that this is *THE* translation for the series and left it at that.
As for hobbit, that did manage to get printed, but the translator was banned from publishing so he had to do it under a friend's name
