What benefits were there for men in, say, 1800s america? They couldnt get most jobs if they werent married in which case they also had to pay bachelor taxes. "Free" men were discarded more easily than slaves, if a slave was crippled or killed while working, thats expensive, if a "free" man was, not your problem, no costs

It was only when widdows and orphans organised to complain about the lack of income from their now dead husband and father that workplace safety was considered
