Russia has officially created a major military base in Venezuela, and are installing advanced AA system's throughout the country.

This is now the second time they have defied US power hegemony, the first time being Syria.

This move seems a pretty big one, even if it doesn't seem all that bold, it kind of is

The US has acted with impunity for far too long, every power needs a counterbalance.

Russia might not be as strong as the US, but its the closest thing to a rival we have.

That's why i saw one of the reasons for the Soviet Union to exist, was it was a equal powered counter-balance.

Russia is trying to exert influence while they still can.

They are going to lose 20-25% of their countries population by 2050.

When they start losing massive swathes of population, they wont be able to act as a power anymore.

The issue with China, while they have a bigger ground military and economy, population, everything.

They have far less international bases, a FAR smaller merchant and supply ships fleet and a far smaller navy and airforce compared to Russia, also Russia has far more natural resources, Oil, wheat, barley, lumber, etc.

And in the modern scene, ground armies are only useful for full on warfare

Navy and Airforce are the primary things that project and exert power.

Also, Russia still has all the old Soviet doctorine's and contingencies.

Not to mention Russia has like 30x the nukes, and they are much more advanced than China's
