That didnt refute anything like I said hedonism fails to define many things

2018-12-12 20:15:57 UTC

and it SHOULDNT define these things

2018-12-12 20:16:01 UTC

thats an empirical question

2018-12-12 20:16:11 UTC

the things you are looking for

2018-12-12 20:16:37 UTC

What are values, how do they benefit me, how do I keep them, to what standard are they based, how do I know which ones are consistent?

2018-12-12 20:17:16 UTC

im not sure values can be inconsistent. They are whatever you value. Perfctly consistent right there

2018-12-12 20:17:25 UTC

the standart is net-pleasure

2018-12-12 20:17:42 UTC

is there a happy medium between hedonism and stoicism?

2018-12-12 20:18:01 UTC

@AHeroQuest is it even a contradiction?

2018-12-12 20:18:04 UTC

Yeah have a little poison with that food

2018-12-12 20:18:16 UTC

Sorry but thats a contradiction

2018-12-12 20:18:23 UTC

you can be ascetic and a hedonist.

2018-12-12 20:18:37 UTC

if you value a simple life, perfectly consistent with hedonism.

2018-12-12 20:18:59 UTC

Except to what standard is something a value?

2018-12-12 20:19:09 UTC

Btw guess what! Hedonism doesnt define this

2018-12-12 20:19:14 UTC

there can never be a "standart" for a value

2018-12-12 20:19:18 UTC

Thus leading to contradictions

2018-12-12 20:19:26 UTC

Values are allways subjective. Theycant be anything but subjective

2018-12-12 20:19:31 UTC

Lol

2018-12-12 20:19:41 UTC

This is too good

2018-12-12 20:19:41 UTC

thats what value literaly means

2018-12-12 20:19:46 UTC

something that is valued by someone

2018-12-12 20:20:03 UTC

It can be objective lol

2018-12-12 20:20:08 UTC

Life as the standard

2018-12-12 20:20:19 UTC

why should life be valuable?

2018-12-12 20:20:39 UTC

As it is implied metaphysically

2018-12-12 20:20:50 UTC

The purpose of a human is to sustain life

2018-12-12 20:21:07 UTC

no. thats just the result of natural selection, thats not the purpose

2018-12-12 20:21:20 UTC

and it most certainly isnt intrinsicly valuable

2018-12-12 20:21:24 UTC

nothing can ever be

2018-12-12 20:21:31 UTC

There is only one fundamental alternative in the universe: existence or non-existence—and it pertains to a single class of entities: to living organisms. The existence of inanimate matter is unconditional, the existence of life is not: it depends on a specific course of action. Matter is indestructible, it changes its forms, but it cannot cease to exist. It is only a living organism that faces a constant alternative: the issue of life or death. Life is a process of self-sustaining and self-generated action. If an organism fails in that action, it dies; its chemical elements remain, but its life goes out of existence. It is only the concept of “Life” that makes the concept of “Value” possible. It is only to a living entity that things can be good or evil.

2018-12-12 20:21:54 UTC

Only a living entity can have goals or can originate them. And it is only a living organism that has the capacity for self-generated, goal-directed action. On the physical level, the functions of all living organisms, from the simplest to the most complex—from the nutritive function in the single cell of an amoeba to the blood circulation in the body of a man—are actions generated by the organism itself and directed to a single goal: the maintenance of the organism’s life.

An organism’s life depends on two factors: the material or fuel which it needs from the outside, from its physical background, and the action of its own body, the action of using that fuel properly. What standard determines what is proper in this context? The standard is the organism’s life, or: that which is required for the organism’s survival.

2018-12-12 20:22:21 UTC

well why should one value any of that?

2018-12-12 20:22:38 UTC

You havent sold me on any value being objective.

2018-12-12 20:22:41 UTC

Because its the bodies literal purpose to sustain itself

2018-12-12 20:22:49 UTC

why should i value a purpose?

2018-12-12 20:22:49 UTC

It is to be consistent with reality

2018-12-12 20:22:58 UTC

As to not contradict

2018-12-12 20:23:04 UTC

why can't there be a mixture of both? It seems disingenuous to claim we should live life for all of the pleasures but then claim we should go through hell without acknowledging how much it hurts. Having it set as either-or just sounds like a world not worth living in

2018-12-12 20:23:07 UTC

Survival is not value, or teleology. It is simply natural selection, as Punks said.

2018-12-12 20:23:22 UTC

i dont see any contradictions in hedonism BUT, why should i valueconsistency and noncontradiction?
