i think effectively putting price controls on the internet makes it slower for everyone
which is fair i guess in a commie type of fair

2018-12-15 14:04:19 UTC

but isn't it now a state, thing?

2018-12-15 14:04:27 UTC

i thought this removal thing was only on federal level

2018-12-15 14:05:45 UTC

yeah
but to me seems kinda hard to argue that californa or new jersey basically stopped the bad corporations from taking over the internet

2018-12-15 14:06:07 UTC

California seems okay with violating the law anyway when its convenient

2018-12-15 14:06:49 UTC

yeah that too

2018-12-15 14:07:18 UTC

but i'm just wondering when the internet is gonna be dead from ajit pai

2018-12-15 14:08:40 UTC

Its not, i said it before it got repealed,

It most likely wont do anything, companies are out for getting money, which means they'll want people to accept their services,

If they start throddling big places, people will get upset and move to another ISP who does

2018-12-15 14:10:38 UTC

The removal of net neutrality hasn't really had an impact yet but ISPs in the US often have regional monopolies, people don't want to give the ISPs so much power over what their users can do with their service when there's no alternative

2018-12-15 14:10:57 UTC

The ISPs wanted net neutrality repealed for a reason

2018-12-15 14:11:07 UTC

but if they ruin those regions, there WILL be alternatives, cuz they see "hmm, heres thousands of new potential people i can steal"

2018-12-15 14:11:22 UTC

before that it was "well, i can't "outperform" that company so i wont try to take over"

2018-12-15 14:11:29 UTC

I doubt it, see data caps in rural areas

2018-12-15 14:11:31 UTC

and people were stuck with shitty internet cuz theres no alternative

2018-12-15 14:11:54 UTC

they already had that

2018-12-15 14:12:20 UTC

in general US ISP's are shitty mind you 😛

2018-12-15 14:12:29 UTC

Yeah, data caps were being placed on rural users and they have no option but to give their ISP more money to use their internet past the cap

2018-12-15 14:12:38 UTC

Competition has not happened

2018-12-15 14:12:49 UTC

not profitable enough yet

2018-12-15 14:13:01 UTC

You have local fiber popping up here and there though which is good

2018-12-15 14:13:08 UTC

Hopefully that becomes more popular

2018-12-15 14:13:21 UTC

if it becomes succesful enough, it will prolly

2018-12-15 14:14:29 UTC

@Dr.Wol internet gets slower

2018-12-15 14:14:51 UTC

Have 1mbps today had 1mbps 10years ago

2018-12-15 14:15:21 UTC

That's anecdotal evidence to be fair

2018-12-15 14:15:24 UTC

i used to have 1 mbps, but my ISP upgraded the minimum package to be 5 mbps 😄 so i had no choice

2018-12-15 14:15:31 UTC

so whats the timeframe before we can start to see an impact from the removal of net neutrality?

2018-12-15 14:15:38 UTC

depends really

2018-12-15 14:15:41 UTC

Who knows

2018-12-15 14:15:49 UTC

10 years?

2018-12-15 14:16:02 UTC

shouldnt the speeds just keep increasing?

2018-12-15 14:16:03 UTC

Point is the ISPs wanted NN lifted for a reason, we'll see why eventually

2018-12-15 14:16:08 UTC

if the ISP's do it over 10 years you'll hardly see any outrage, its the frog in the pan

2018-12-15 14:17:39 UTC

Also the concern with net neutrality repeal isnt slowing down of speeds, its certain websites being throttled, the unthrottled speed of your internet will only go up over time due to upgrades in infrastructure

2018-12-15 14:17:44 UTC

maybe its so big companies like facebook/google can bribe ISP's do start throddling competitors

2018-12-15 14:18:41 UTC

i guess i'll check back after another year

2018-12-15 14:20:03 UTC

Um, it is recognised here that Repubs generally are against net neutrality and Dems are for it, right? Have I fallen into an alternate universe where you're all Democrats now? O_O

2018-12-15 14:20:18 UTC

republicans believe in democracy too

2018-12-15 14:21:00 UTC

i seem to know a lot of conservatives who are pro net neutrality

2018-12-15 14:21:25 UTC

I'm pretty sure net neutrality was popular when people were polled on the issue, something like 80% approval

Being for net neutrality doesn't make you a democrat and i don't identify as a democrat, though i am center left

2018-12-15 14:21:34 UTC

Just because someone favors a party
