given that Trump paid his lawyer
he was buying legal services, with personal value to him
if he had used campaign funds for that expenditure, it really would have been a felony
(and that is long settled with plenty of precedent)

so now we have this scenario where the thing is seen as a campaign contribution
but using campaign funds for this purpose would be a felony
