I will point out something you are slightly wrong about. No US soldier is required to obay an unlawful order. And it's very likely that significant portions of it would consider authoritarian use of the military as unlawful and would rebel against their superiors. There would be plenty of opportunitist willing to back the handful of idealist. Most of the military is right leaning and smaller government types.
