How efficient is solar currently? Doesn't it only make use of less than 10% of the potential energy or is my info out of date?

2019-01-23 17:10:09 UTC

You reallocate from one part of the budget (say some SJW bullshit) to solve a real problem.

2019-01-23 17:10:28 UTC

The latest gen solar PV is more efficient than that.

2019-01-23 17:10:35 UTC

But solar thermal is where it's at.

2019-01-23 17:10:40 UTC

Solar energy currently has been less efficient from high temp

2019-01-23 17:11:07 UTC

Basically using parabolic mirrors to heat molten salt, whcih drives a turbine 24/7 (wince the salt doesn't cool overnight).

2019-01-23 17:11:47 UTC

I work (in a non-technical capacity) in renewable energy research.

2019-01-23 17:12:03 UTC

high temperature has been killing solar cells efficiency

2019-01-23 17:12:24 UTC

their peak energy output is apparently like 25 degrees

2019-01-23 17:12:25 UTC

worked, I should say.

2019-01-23 17:12:28 UTC

celcius

2019-01-23 17:12:30 UTC

Solar cells and solar heating are two different things

2019-01-23 17:12:48 UTC

Solar heating is solar thermal.

2019-01-23 17:12:54 UTC

It can scale.

2019-01-23 17:13:04 UTC

And it's potentially cheap.

2019-01-23 17:13:07 UTC

Solar thermal isn't going to work in cold regions and solar cells are very inefficient, costly technology with a lot of waste

2019-01-23 17:13:09 UTC

i've only seen solar heating for peoples hot water, and that has its own issues

2019-01-23 17:13:28 UTC

But Sure.

2019-01-23 17:13:34 UTC

I'm talking about Australia.

2019-01-23 17:13:43 UTC

Where solar thermal will certainly work.

2019-01-23 17:13:43 UTC

Its the classic when the wind blows and the sun does not shine, how are you gonna get power

2019-01-23 17:13:49 UTC

Solar heating works you’d think the water would come out cold at 70

2019-01-23 17:13:56 UTC

No it’s near boiling

2019-01-23 17:14:19 UTC

But it’s harder for cold water

2019-01-23 17:14:36 UTC

You store it using hydro-batteries.

2019-01-23 17:14:40 UTC

On that note, it's currently 4am in Australias most populated regions, how did Australia get brought up?

2019-01-23 17:14:51 UTC

It's likely I'm the only Australian up atm

2019-01-23 17:15:00 UTC

straya cunt

2019-01-23 17:15:09 UTC

Lol

2019-01-23 17:15:18 UTC

And maybe you have some traditional fossil fuel stations (esp. natural gas, which can be turned on and off in less than an hour).

2019-01-23 17:15:25 UTC

I have interesting sleeping patterns

2019-01-23 17:15:42 UTC

at this point in the day just call it early riser

2019-01-23 17:15:50 UTC

I live apparently on exactly the opposite side of the world to Oz.

2019-01-23 17:15:58 UTC

No, because I'm about to have a few more hours of sleep

2019-01-23 17:16:03 UTC

Victoria fucked themselves shutting down a coal powerplant and the prices went through the roof

2019-01-23 17:16:19 UTC

they didnt replace the power that the coal generated

2019-01-23 17:16:19 UTC

It was dirty and old...

2019-01-23 17:16:28 UTC

With good planning, that could have been offset.

2019-01-23 17:16:35 UTC

Not that they shouldn't have shut it down but they needed a replacement at the least

2019-01-23 17:17:03 UTC

what they do is when you got high load on the grid, the govt pays steel forges and visy, all the high usage companies to shut down

2019-01-23 17:17:09 UTC

There's a bunch of wind turbines which are surprisingly efficient in Victoria because of the katabatic winds
