@Samer I kinda wonder about that
since soldiers in ancient times wouldn't have the experience of leaving their unit a few months after a traumatic event (or at least not as often), PTSD probably wasn't as prevalent. they'd be on campaign for years at a stretch.
Maybe also slaves?
the romanticized view puts crusaders as a bunch of psychopaths
but given how rare psychopaths actually are in a population, most of them were just normal guys
i dont blame the crusaders, they were tools
i blame the religion and the pope
Crusaders raided villages to survive in foreign lands, not uncommon
if they did have to do the things that we read about, it had to screw them up as much if not more
@Samer acute tramatic stress disorder is different from post tramatic stress disorder
either starve to death or raid that village
"foraging" like that was normal for millennia
Crusaders also met people in melee, with swords, at point blank. I think that might be a bit stressful
Do that for a while and you might break something inside
Romans being the exception as they tended to actually have supply lines
Even til napoleonic times they relied on taking resources from the lands they advanced into
yet they fell
obvious example of france advancing into russia
As have every empire ever
France made a mistake against Russia tho
"In enemy land always advance"
And its all enemy land
Napoleon was a vastly superior tactician to all his enemies, he could defeat them if his army was alive
until his army starved in the russian winter he was still favoured
Never underestimate russian winters though
logistics > strategy > tactics
I think the only ones to actually manage to conqure Russia was the Mongols
Russians are no big deal
It's not like napoleon was gonna stroll into russia then decide half way to walk all the way back to Paris
Fimbulwinterr
its the problem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VgCddIvNuw I think I heard Tim's washer spinning down in the background near the start of the video
he might as well have conquered Moscu at that point
Didnt the russians just abandon moskau? Even set fire to it?
Or was that WW2?
Why would they?
never abandoned it in ww2
napoleonic wars
The Nazi never advance that much didnt they?
