Well, you have two options:
1) Go straight-off-the-bat cold turkey
2) Set up a plan to gradually diminish your alcohol consumption and become more meager about your intake progressively

It's hard to imagine the person in question doing the second because they're already doing the first.
You could stop entirely and make tally marks on a card for every day you've not drank
that's helped me overcome certain... addictions
Person in question also takes valium/diazepam on a daily basis as a medication, but I'm afraid one day it'll turn to addiction since that's how that drug works.
It's more addictive than heroin.

they're also on another 2 meds, one for the bpd and schizophrenia and another to stop the side effects (drooling etc)#

oh yeah, she has catatonia when she's extremely stressed
i try to move her and she pulls back into her original position
which is usually really weird and/or uncomfortable for a normal person, like arms hooked over the shoulders or under the knees, or knees over the shoulders sometimes
