when you feel pain you can help relate to other people in your same circumstance

2020-03-08 21:29:16 UTC

That's unnecessary.

2020-03-08 21:29:18 UTC

Not necessarily a good thing since you can’t connect to people

2020-03-08 21:29:46 UTC

If you need a connection with one or more people, then connect through other virtues.

2020-03-08 21:29:51 UTC

The point of stoicism is that you won't really need that "emotional comfort" when you get in such a situation

2020-03-08 21:30:42 UTC

From a Christian standpoint, you most likely won’t get into heaven if you can’t connect to people

2020-03-08 21:31:24 UTC

How are you going to enjoy life with others if you don’t understand basic sympathy

2020-03-08 21:31:31 UTC

1. I never said that connection with people is entirely excluded, you can connect with them on other levels
2. that is just entirely false. This would mean psychopaths are doomed to eternal torture just by virtue of being what they are, which they didn't choose

2020-03-08 21:32:20 UTC

Connection can be made through other virtues as well, not just pain. And having sympathy is normal for a Stoic, since he's been there. He can actually give advice to the person currently in pain, because he's become an expert in dealing with pain.

2020-03-08 21:32:49 UTC

I never said psychopaths can’t go to heaven

2020-03-08 21:33:37 UTC

You said that by virtue of being unable to "connect with people", they won't be able to get to heaven

2020-03-08 21:33:43 UTC

Just that they’re less likely because they can’t understand emotions

2020-03-08 21:33:43 UTC

Psychopaths fit this criteria

2020-03-08 21:33:57 UTC

Well, they can "reason themselves into it"

2020-03-08 21:34:36 UTC

> From a Christian standpoint, you most likely won’t get into heaven if you can’t connect to people
@moira

2020-03-08 21:35:25 UTC

I suppose that psychopaths make an exception, since, as ofvo said, they didn't choose to be psychotic, and most of them can't connect to people.

2020-03-08 21:35:40 UTC

Some basic principles of Christianity are love, empathy and peace

2020-03-08 21:35:56 UTC

Salvation is not reached thru love empathy and peace lol

2020-03-08 21:35:58 UTC

So if they're more likely to go to hell instead of heaven, because of something that they didn't choose, then God is kind of a jerk, which I refuse to accept.

2020-03-08 21:36:37 UTC

How do you reach salvation then

2020-03-08 21:37:00 UTC

This sounds like /religion/

2020-03-08 21:37:04 UTC

By becoming born again

2020-03-08 21:37:15 UTC

Which is thru a baptism, and repentance

2020-03-08 21:37:46 UTC

But that's besides the point, I don't see how any of this is relevant to your misunderstanding of stoicism

2020-03-08 21:38:09 UTC

@Maksim Religion and philosophy are not mutually exclusive.

2020-03-08 21:38:22 UTC

Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not.

2020-03-08 21:38:39 UTC

When are they mutually exclussive?

2020-03-08 21:38:55 UTC

How can a psychopath repent for sins they dont even know are wrong

2020-03-08 21:39:01 UTC

And yeah that was drawn offtopic

2020-03-08 21:39:21 UTC

phows a stoic going to respond to their kid if he suffers a breakup

2020-03-08 21:39:31 UTC

or their pets death

2020-03-08 21:39:54 UTC

The kid should be ready to face that pain. @moira

2020-03-08 21:39:57 UTC

Theology and Philosophy are mutually exclusive

2020-03-08 21:40:01 UTC

Because it'll make it stronger.

2020-03-08 21:40:08 UTC

@Maksim Not always.

2020-03-08 21:40:09 UTC

*it*

2020-03-08 21:40:29 UTC

You're confusing epistomology with emotions. They can know that what they did was wrong, without feeling an "emotional" connection with it

2020-03-08 21:41:16 UTC

@Koninos not what i asked

2020-03-08 21:41:23 UTC

how is a stoic going to help him deal

2020-03-08 21:41:24 UTC

What did you ask?

2020-03-08 21:41:26 UTC
