but immigration is way up and violent crimes are way down
you can look at the stats
Correlation does not equal causation, especially not in this case.
1) Because as I said most immigrants are innocent people looking for a better life and 2) They are a small portion of crimes any time at any point in history simply because they're a small portion of the population.
okay so we have a tiny portion of immigrants commiting crimes
thats unavoidable
Just because they're innocent doesn't mean they aren't selfish for breaking the law to the chagrin of people who come here legally and become good citizens.
It is illegal for a reason. We need strong borders. We're a country.
People should not be allowed to come in without being vetted. Saying they don't commit crimes is not reason to be against a border wall.
10% of Mexico's population has emigrated to the US.
So if we just make legal immigration easier, and they crossed legally, everything would be fine?
This is not a small problem.
*they all cross legally
Yes.
what benefits do illegal immigrants get, that legal immigrants don't get?
I don't get your meaning.
When you emigrate illegally for the sole reason that there are more immigrants than we could take in legally you risk being turned away, denied citizenship, etc. and this is a real fear for immigrants.
So if we just increase the number of visas and staffers for background checks, then all illegal immigrants would just cross legally, because the process will be quicker.
So there aren't benefits. It's a matter of expedience to not go through the citizenship process and fear of being rejected.
why build a wall when we can increase the rate of legal immigration?
Because I don't think we should be bringing in thousands of illiterate poorly educated people who don't speak English and as it stands are not encouraged at all to assimilate.
I would turn most away.
I only want intelligent skilled workers.
My parents were intelligent skilled workers fleeing post-Soviet dirt poor Eastern Europe.
My family assimilated and we all speak English
This is the kind of immigration we need.
Yeah, i guess i just don't value "culture" like you do. I could care less if someone is uneducated or can't speak english
i really don't care if my neighbor is retarded
Citizenship processing is an assimilation process.
All people in a country should share basic values and ideology if not a shared history and race.
This is what makes a country a nation instead of a plot of land.
What values of mexican culture are so different from american? other than language
American values are rooted in Lockean liberal thought and religious freedom. Not so much a lack of shared values as a lack of emphasis on those in Mexico.
Cultural identity is important as well.
Americans should have a shared cultural identity.
Foremost and most superficially is a shared language.
Oof
The standardization of language is credited with the creation of the nation-state in the 19th century.
10% of France spoke French in the 18th century.
