Venezuela's economy was heavily reliant oil, to the exclusion of many other industries (kind of like in Libya but not quite as bad) and while they were diversifying some aspects of the economy they couldn't pull it off fast enough

and their production is shit because they were not upkeeping their rigs and lines

extreme poverty rate also managed to be brought to historic lows under Chavez

heavy industry is high maintenance, and the gov did not do so, they gave the money to politicians instead of production

so now their output is way down and as prices are way down they are double screwed for their bad crude

and it is bad, it needs to be cut with light crude in order to be refined

So ultimately in Venezuela you had a functioning country that was making progress across a multitude of development indicators, both social and economic, and it was then brought down by factors ultimately external to itself and due to US geopolitics vs. Russia. So the "muh Venezuela" argument is really just very myopic and not very well informed.
