you can still wanna live

2018-12-28 14:13:50 UTC

Why do the emotions matter

2018-12-28 14:13:59 UTC

i meant that medically

2018-12-28 14:14:32 UTC

if you are disabled say

2018-12-28 14:15:00 UTC

I mean Huff there's no real clear answer to any of these questions. We all have our opinions on these matters and our opinions are probably in large part determined by our particular conditions and life history. There very likely isn't going to be an objective standard to be found for the questions you ask.

2018-12-28 14:15:15 UTC

So there is no objective standard

2018-12-28 14:15:26 UTC

For questions dependent on subjects' conditions of life, yes

2018-12-28 14:15:48 UTC

Good

2018-12-28 14:16:28 UTC

The want of a system where there is freedom for individuals comes from a subjective standard

2018-12-28 14:16:35 UTC

It does, yes

2018-12-28 14:16:45 UTC

Tell me what you guys think about this... One needs their *freedoms* to fulfill their *responsibilities*.

2018-12-28 14:16:54 UTC

No, not really

2018-12-28 14:17:07 UTC

One has freedoms, and responsibilities, and both overlap here and there but not in all areas

2018-12-28 14:18:24 UTC

You have *freedom* so you can for example Articulate your Thoughts and convince the Society against a Hole that you see in the Future we might fall into.

2018-12-28 14:18:38 UTC

That's why you have Freedom of Speech

2018-12-28 14:18:41 UTC

for example

2018-12-28 14:20:07 UTC

Well yes, freedom is important in that you can not only help yourself in reaching goals and avoiding pitfalls, but to help others in this way also

2018-12-28 14:20:25 UTC

If you are robbed of freedom, you can do neither

2018-12-28 14:21:12 UTC

Of course its built into us, the desire for freedom - the more degrees of freedom an organism has, the better for its chances of survival. In this sense, our desire for freedom has an objective basis.

2018-12-28 14:21:45 UTC

Yes, you have certain responsibilities towards yourself and your family as well, so we have Freedom of Religion.. so you can fulfill your duties towards your God

2018-12-28 14:22:21 UTC

Freedoms exist so that you are allowed a Space to fulfill your duties and responsibilities, to yourself, your family and your society.

2018-12-28 14:22:57 UTC

Well yes but not just that, but also your aspirations

2018-12-28 14:23:14 UTC

Its not solely about duties

2018-12-28 14:23:22 UTC

nor solely about aspirations

2018-12-28 14:23:39 UTC

like in most things, there's a dialectic between the two; one bleeds into another, and they produce synthesis

2018-12-28 14:23:44 UTC

Your aspirations should ideally be actually good for yourself, your family and your society... shouldn't they?

2018-12-28 14:24:17 UTC

also i don't agree at all with the statement, more freedom an individual organism has the better it's chances of survival.. that's just not true in any sense

2018-12-28 14:24:50 UTC

Aspirations usually are by default in the interest of the subject, and in cases they aren't I think its often the case that something is wrong with the brain of the individual, there's mental illness, perhaps a brain tumour etc. when self-harming

2018-12-28 14:25:02 UTC

You have all the freedom to build yourself up *and* to destroy yourself.

2018-12-28 14:25:08 UTC

It really matters what you do with it..

2018-12-28 14:26:32 UTC

```Aspirations usually are by default in the interest of the subject, and in cases they aren't I think its often the case that something is wrong with the brain of the individual, there's mental illness, perhaps a brain tumour etc. when self-harming```
nah man, it happens all the time.. we think we want something.. we try.. we get it.. and then we're like.. meh..
it's hard to know what is actually good for us and what will satisfy us, it's not as easy and not everyone is able to figure it out by themselves.
2018-12-28 14:26:34 UTC
> also i don't agree at all with the statement, more freedom an individual organism has the better it's chances of survival.. that's just not true in any sense
The degrees of freedom translate to greater number of pastures to feed in, more options to hide from predators, more pathways to escape should a predator pursue you; in social context degrees of freedom might translate to number of the population and thereby potential mates, etc.
2018-12-28 14:26:54 UTC
Certainly the opposite is true at least,
2018-12-28 14:26:55 UTC
that is,
2018-12-28 14:27:02 UTC
the less degrees of freedom, the worse
2018-12-28 14:27:17 UTC
not on an individual basis.
2018-12-28 14:27:40 UTC
i won't totally discard Parentalism (i think that's what it's called)
2018-12-28 14:27:47 UTC
> it's hard to know what is actually good for us and what will satisfy us, it's not as easy and not everyone is able to figure it out by themselves.
I don't think anyone figures it out by themselves
2018-12-28 14:28:40 UTC
the more freedom you have, not only the more options you have to succeed
2018-12-28 14:28:46 UTC
the more options you have to fuckup
2018-12-28 14:28:48 UTC
if you have a crack addict and you administer them an authoritarian intervention where you're able to slowly ween them off crack say.. you have curtailed their freedom and as a result they might survive and not be miserable @Xinyue
