They don't seem to be saying they're better.
But holy hell, they're huffing those farts DEEP.
They implied it with the "when the stakes have never been higher" bit
Not "close enough", if they said no such thing they said no such thing.
It's saying that the stakes have never been higher on the media's end, and that they deserve thanks for the same reason the military does, without actually commenting on who is the biggest freedom defender.
Now, they are wrong, they are absolutely not defenders of freedom.
Also, you have to love them bringing up Jefferson as an argument in favor of the free press. Not saying there shouldn't be a free press, but maybe don't pick the guy famous among the founding fathers for using the press to slander his political opponents to bolster your arguments.
But they certainly didn't dare say they were better.
The comparison is especially ironic given the role that the press has played in getting us into wars in the past. Nothing sells papers or bumps ratings like a good war, after all.
One has to wonder if only for a second how many soldiers and civilians have died needlessly because of that.
