I doubt teaching them will work in the long run

2018-08-04 00:16:22 UTC

There's dozens of stories of Christian missions going to Haiti and showing the people how to farm and then when they come back a year later to check on their progress, the land has completely been salted and ruined because they don't know how to maintain it and they use it for other purposes than farming

2018-08-04 00:18:50 UTC

They'd likely refuse the help. I remember reading about some case in South Africa where some people's land was entrusted to a tribal council and they refused educational help (but decided not to refuse the government money) offered because they claimed they wanted a black farm to be run by black people and for people not to think that they were incompetent. Ironic considering that the farm was defunct in 5 years and the tribal council had been embezzling the funds

That's why I wouldn't just get people in to show them how to plant stuff. I'd put people through university WELL before any expropriation happened.

Make Farming School Great Again

2018-08-04 00:21:26 UTC

An actual degree in Agriculture is VERY different to a missionary showing you how to do something.

2018-08-04 00:22:34 UTC

Take the San out of the reservations and put them through farming school

2018-08-04 00:22:50 UTC

But these people are both evil and stupid, so they didn't think of that.

2018-08-04 00:23:05 UTC

The stolen fruit will turn to ashes in their mouths.

2018-08-04 00:23:39 UTC

It's hard in South Africa and Haiti. These people think this shit happens by magic. They have no understanding or appreciation of how much thought and work actually goes into maintaining a farm in those places.

2018-08-04 00:24:09 UTC

Most people in the west don't either.

2018-08-04 00:24:29 UTC

Because they've been told by their leaders that the farmers just sit around and get rich

2018-08-04 00:24:34 UTC

Farming is a specialist, and under-appreciated skillset.

2018-08-04 00:24:46 UTC

lol

2018-08-04 00:25:48 UTC

@Dinosorcerer These people are going to get a rude shock.

2018-08-04 00:26:55 UTC

Some of them already have, but the lesson hasn't seemed to take

2018-08-04 00:28:33 UTC

I don't think this has happened in SA yet.

2018-08-04 00:28:57 UTC

It happened in Zimbabwe a while ago, but no one wanted to learn those lessons.

2018-08-04 00:29:08 UTC

It's going to happen eventually

2018-08-04 00:29:29 UTC

Yes, after they actually take the land.

2018-08-04 00:31:44 UTC

There have been a few isolated cases in SA like the one I talked about above

2018-08-04 00:32:35 UTC

I have no sympathy for people who steal and murder, then starve as a consequence. However, these people are also condemning innocent children to the same fate.

2018-08-04 00:34:25 UTC

@Dinosorcerer Got links to these isolated cases?

2018-08-04 00:35:13 UTC

I honestly didn't think you'd start seeing it this soon.

2018-08-04 00:35:56 UTC

How does 2004 sound?

2018-08-04 00:36:16 UTC

wut

2018-08-04 00:36:44 UTC

How can you attribute happenings in 2004 to stuff happening this year and last year?

2018-08-04 00:37:37 UTC

it was during an earlier land reform effort

2018-08-04 00:38:11 UTC

Oh, what did this effort consist of?

2018-08-04 00:41:06 UTC

legal shennanigans and corruption warped the law into essentially creating the conditions that new laws the ANC is considering would implement on a nation-wide scale

2018-08-04 00:42:25 UTC

Considering?

2018-08-04 00:42:32 UTC

It sounds like a sure thing to me.

2018-08-04 00:43:00 UTC

well, I say "considering" in the same way a lawyer says "alleged" when they know their client is guilty

2018-08-04 00:45:01 UTC

it's the term they're using, but make no mistake, I fully expect them to go ahead with this

2018-08-04 00:46:12 UTC

These people make western politicians look like geniuses.

2018-08-04 00:47:19 UTC

now the 2004 case is different in that the farmers were actually paid for their land, which probably explains why they offered to help with the farm afterwords

2018-08-04 00:48:21 UTC

I doubt the people being murdered and stole from will be so accommodating.

2018-08-04 00:48:45 UTC

my thinking exactly

2018-08-04 00:53:42 UTC

I wonder if it would be possible to engineer a strange crop plant that can be grown by people with a perception of farming shaped by ideology.
