Turtles are pretty nice little things, assuming they're not the snapping type.

I don't mind the snappers myself. They're pretty benign if left unagitated in my experience. They look pretty prehistoric too.

I've got no experience of them except for a disturbing vid I saw of one eating a mouse.

Yeah I don't doubt they eat large animals in a grotesque fashion but yeah I've encountered a number in the rivers around here and taken pictures of some, years ago. They don't attack unless they feel their life is threatened, like most snakes.

Or larger animals anyway

They drop the mouse into the tank with it and it bites it in half, the top half tries to swim away and escape.
