The two party system can't really be changed unless you are willing to change the electoral system significantly
and I wouldn't trust the people in power to fix something like this.
The reason we have the two party system is because it would be a complete waste of time to vote for any other party in an actual election so you would likely need some kind of Proportional representation in order to change that
that or have a proper system to remove and redistribute the delegates from the weaker candidates.
but again, I don't trust them to fix it.
I'm quite sure the original system actually had the states electing delegates and then those delegates electing the president.
and not just because fast communication wasn't an option.
its more centered on the voting process itself. 'first past the post' by its nature whittles down all but two competing parties
seems to be the case.
They could change it to be an STV voting system but it would make counting the votes very difficult to do
its rather insidious how it does so, too, because it relies on the mentality of 'voting against' rather than voting for
yah it could.
ranked choice voting would likely be a beneficial fix
I think what you would want to do is have your first count, then you mark all the ballots with a tag or something.
Is there a difference between "single transferable vote" and "ranked choice"?
especially since.. where was it Ohio? there was a ballot measure to attempt an election with ranked choice votes. the measure passed, and an "emergancy legislative conference" was assembled to nullify it
so the big fish KNOW it threatens their power monopoly
I don't know what flavor it is but Maine has some sort of not "first past the post" voteing.
or duopoly rather
eh, they are bolth happy with eachother, I think it is only the last little bit where the dems have lost the plot and started trying to destroy the repubs.
and the repubs were always happy to just be the opposition party it seems, as they (until trump) were never willing to fight for real.
Republicans pretty much just say whatever they have to say to keep their jobs and then either do nothing or the opposite
For now they pretend to be on Trump team because they don't really have a choice if they wanna get reelected I feel
yah I wouldn't put it past them to flip right back to the same old crap once trump is out.
well yeah, and for the record, you think democrats are being obstructionist? fucks sake, just wait til Republicans are the opposition party again
you'd think Obama got off light
and see I've been sick of the 'god emperor' bullshit from day one.
yeah he's not hitler, and despite my disgust for his weakness toward jihadists, I can't use that alone to say he's even a net negative performer
but god damn, the regency references are nauseating
eh I feel you
I think him being in office buys time before things really go to shit, but
people hold him up high like he's going solve everything
because to my continual annoyance everyone just decides to forget Carrier
"Yes, I'll punish carrier for attempting to ship jobs to mexico"
proceeds to give them tax benefits and save zero jobs
a complete fucking scam
ah that's right
right leaning media only reported the first half as I recall
bending the knee to the red flag laws
so he got credit in public memory where nothing was really done
